I had a student try on an assessment for the first time in years. He decided that he really wanted to know his Reading Level. In my opinion this is an example of a student moving from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset.

We recently studied Langston Hughes poem, "A Dream Deferred". The poem illustrates choices made when we face disappointment. Several students talked about their efforts to think more positively of themselves. I hope to motivate them to write daily goals as we move forward. I think this is a Growth Mindset.

At the beginning of my teaching career, I couldn't grasp how students didn't understand certain topics by the time they reached me. For instance...I was baffled that some students couldn't multiply in 8th grade. But understanding the students' background and realizing that due to circumstances beyond many students' control, they simply missed some skills altogether.

Our students come to this school with a fixed mindset. "I can't" I don't want to" . Our job is to motivate them towards a growth mindset of ability vs. negativity

One of our 10th graders we have had repeatedly has just developed this mindset, instead of his usual defensive side when addressed to now just stopping what he is doing wrong and waits to see the outcome. I used to become short with him but once we open the playing field, he is now open to change and applying himself.

Students come to us mad at the world because they were sent to us. I normally use the Fix mindset until I can connect with the students. Once I have made a connection then I move into the Growth Mindset.
