Eric is building a tall structure but the structure keeps falling because he uses small blocks at the bottom.

1. Teacher can demonstrate the steps to put the larger blocks first before putting the smaller blocks. As she does so, she can instruct Eric on how to do so.
- “First I will start putting the larger blocks at the bottom of the structure”.
- “As the structure gets taller, I will then place the smaller blocks on top of all the larger blocks”.
2. Eric will then do it with the teacher and the teacher can praise him and provide prompts as Eric builds the structure.
-“Good try Eric but are you sure you should place the blocks here?”
3. If Eric forgets to put the larger blocks first, the teacher can ask him why he choose to do so.
-“Why did you place the blocks there?”
4. After the structure is completed, the teacher can praise Eric.
-“Good job on completing a structure that will not easily topple”.
5. Eric can then be paired out with a peer and teach the peer how to build a structure without it always falling.
6. Teacher can then tell Eric good job for teaching his peer.
-“Well done for teaching your friend!”

Teacher asks Eric "What are you building, Eric? Do you need some help?" Eric says "I'm trying to build a house but it keeps falling apart."

Step 1: Teacher says "Do you know why it keeps falling apart? What do you think we can do to stop this problem?" Teacher can point to the building and ask Eric to observe the structure of it. Eric says "The bigger block keeps falling off the smaller blocks"Teacher asks Eric if he needs help. She can then demonstrate by putting a smaller block on top of a bigger block. She can then ask Eric "do you think this is better?" It is more stable to put a smaller block on top because it will not fall.

Step 2:
Teacher lets Eric try to construct his building, offering prompts and hints when he faces difficulty building the structure.

Step 3:
When Eric is building the structure by himself, the teacher can ask him "Do you think you should put the block here or there?" "Should you use bigger or smaller blocks at the bottom?" She can praise Eric when he does it correctly.

Step 4:
Teacher praises Eric for making the structure stronger while using a better method. She describes what he is doing right and offers feedback on what he can improve on.

Step 5:
Teacher then asks Eric to work with another child to build a different structure. Observe if Eric has understood and can display his understanding through the building of the blocks.

Step 6:
The teacher can say "Waow, Good job! I can see that you are building the smaller blocks on top and the bigger blocks at the bottom."

1. Ask Eric what is he building. Eric would say an aeroplane like Helena.
2. Eric struggles to join 2 big legos on one end to make the wings.

Scaffolding:
1. Teacher can hint Eric to observe how Helena joins her lego blocks. Prompt Eric to do the same. Praise him for trying.
2. Provide verbal cues and encouragements. ‘Good job, I like the colours you chose for the wings’
3. Ask Eric, “instead of joining them at the very end, what else can you do?” Based on Eric’s answer, help him to paraphrase his sentences. “Would it be better if you move the lego inwards?”
4. Praise him for trying. Provide feedback that the legos keep deconstructing as it was unbalanced. “It will fall off as it only sticks to a bit of on end. *Points to Helena’s aeroplane* ’Look at how Helena linked her blocks together. Is it shorter or longer than yours?’
5. Get Eric to build an aeroplane together with Helena. ‘How about you try to build an aeroplane with Helena? I’m sure both of you would build an amazing one.’
6. Provide constructive feedback about what he has improved, and what could be done better next time round. “I observed that you were not able to make the wings of your aeroplane stay. But now you’re able to do so. I’m proud of what you achieved today. Next time you can use this method to build other things with your friends too.’
