This is a photo of a young woman wearing her neck rings. This is an old tradition still present in today's Kayan society of Thailand. This tradition begins at young stages of ones life, and the older women get the more beautiful many believe they are as a result of their stretched necks. These gold coils that women wear around their necks weigh around 25 pounds each to depress the shoulders and chest, thus stretching out the woman's neck. This traditional ultimately supports the idea that the longer the neck, the more beautiful the woman. I believe this relates to North-American women as well, no this tradition of neck rings is not something one would ever see in North America. However this tradition and belief reminds me of the hate that many people find in their "double chins" in North American societies today.

The ideal face shape that represents beauty in Thailand is the v-line face. The classic round shaped, or heart shaped head is not beautiful in Thailand. Both women and men seek the v-line, slim jaw face, and go to any extreme to achieve this look. Companies sell products that supposedly enhance the jaw live, and lift the rest of the face in order for many to achieve this look. Not only this, however many women and men result to cosmetic surgery to lift ones face. Jaw and cheek-bone reduction surgeries are some of the most popular cosmetic surgeries many women result to in order to achieve this ideal look.

Again stemming from old tradition and beliefs, many women seek the look of very fair skin. Women walk the streets with umbrellas and visors protecting their faces, even wearing gloves on the hottest of days. Many say they do this to protect their porcelain looking faces, and ultimately prevent wrinkles from producing on their skin. However the original belief that many Thai women had was one regarding their social advantages. Many believed that the more "white" a women's skin the more house-work or less work in general they did, rather than many that were at the time very tanned from being what they say "peasant" and doing work out doors, for example farm work. The belief that these women carried was that the lighter skin one has, the higher of a social class their future husband would be.

Another idea that is followed by almost every Thai woman or man is the idea that beauty stems from the inside-out. Many believe that a restful body and stress-free mind or life shows on ones face, affecting their beauty. Thai massages are something that people of Thailand are known for, and have been brought to North-America as well. Thai massages are performed how they are said to be done in Thailand, and are known to be one of the best, most popular massages one can receive. I personally do believe in this idea that beauty stems from the inside-out. I believe in this because I know personally the better I feel about myself on the inside the better I feel about my surroundings and the more confident I am in my life in general.

The look of firm, young and ultimately youthful skin is one that many seek to achieve and maintain all their lives. Thailand is known to have many bizarre treatments to achieve their social standards of beauty however this is one I found very odd. In order to maintain their firm, youthful skin women undergo "slap facials", which is undergoing someone slapping your face multiple times. The slapping of the face is said to increase blood flow and possible swelling, leaving the face more full and firm. Many american doctors have agreed that this treatment only provides individuals with temporary results, immediately after undergoing this. A video I found interesting and very eye-opening on the topic is linked below.

This is something fairly new to the Thai culture. Many women have been undergoing plastic surgery to achieve the "krachap lip", otherwise known as the buffalo lip. This was named after the buffalo nut, or chest nut, otherwise known as the Krachap in Thailand. Many believe the size of the upper lip should be half the size of the lower lip, in order to complete this procedure tissue is taken from the upper lip and brought to the centre in order to resemble a buffalo horn. Dozens of plastic surgeons have declined and even doubled their prices of these surgeries in order to discourage women from undergoing them, however the procedure and look of these lips has just become more and more popular.

A very popular beauty trend in Thailand and all asian countries is wide-eyes. Women seek to have wider, more open and large eyes, portraying what they say is the "western eye", and a very innocent looking eye as well. I believe many of the beauty norms in Thailand, however this one specifically, stems from the desire to look like anime characters, cartoons commonly watched in these societies. Products are being sold in Thailand such as plus-sized contact lenses, which make women's irises look larger. Procedures such as "double eye-lid surgery" have developed and have become some of the most popular cosmetic procedures in these societies today.

Miss Thailand 2014 is someone who has challenged many of the beauty standards in Thailand, especially the fair skin standard. In North America so many women strive to have tanned, glowing skin, which is why I couldn't believe when reading up on Thai beauty standards that this was something looked down upon. Maeya Thongleng, Miss Thailand 2014 stated, “Many Thais want to be white and those with dark skin try to hide it. They think they aren’t good enough but I’ve shown them that this isn’t true.”. I believe Maeya has truly impacted much of the Thailand culture, proving to women they are beautiful no matter what society expects of them. The message that beauty means light coloured skin has been drilled into Thai women's minds for ages, and Maeya has finally set an example, for Thai women especially that this expectation is false. You can see that her overall appearance in comparison to all other photo's I have linked truly stands out. Maeya truly shows that confidence in who you are is beauty and I am grateful that she has taken a stand against these societal norms she had been expected to achieve.

In my opinion the beauty norms of Thailand differ from what we see across the world today. However, aspects such as cosmetic surgery, and skin treatments are very prominent in cultures all over the world. As we learned in "The Illusionists" from Module 3, societies are looked as consumers and nothing more. Regardless of the dangers of these procedures, or even these standards drilled into individuals minds, companies producing these products and developing these procedures care about nothing more than the profit they are making off of them. I believe in our societies today, beauty standards are not expected of individuals as highly as they used to be which is something I am grateful for. As we see with Miss Thailand 2014, many people are taking a stand against these expectations made of them and are realizing what they find naturally beautiful in themselves.
