Hydroelectric development, specifically in the Winnipeg region, has lead to an exponential decrease in the amount of harvestable manoomin. This has lead to food insecurity and has made it harder to transmit traditional ecological knowledge.

Treaties are supposed to ensure mutual benefit, but in this case (among many), Indigenous rights are not being protected.

We didn't get to listen to this podcast but from the audio clip that we heard it seemed as if this rice is a big part of their culture just like how Pasta is a big part of italian culture. People were say that it brings back memories of family and friends who have pasted or who as still alive just from the smell of the different dishes that contain the rice.
