Hello,

I am a big fan of prioritizing self-care. Even in a busy week of work or a busy weekend of completing last-minute choirs or assignments, I carve out time for activities that recharge me.

I always have to remember, that self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a must! Taking care of myself isn’t just about feeling good—it’s about being able to handle whatever life throws my way.

Gerald Corey: Checking In With Our Emotions

Gerald Corey, a wise voice in the counseling world, suggests that taking a moment to check in with our emotions can really help us spot the signs of burnout. Asking ourselves questions like, “How am I really feeling?” or “Am I enjoying the things I used to love?” can shine a light on what’s going on inside.

Running

Something I’d really love to get back into is running. I used to run half marathons, and they were incredibly rewarding for me. Running was more than just exercise; it was also a form of self-care. Physically, I was taking care of my body, and mentally, it gave me a chance to reflect. During those runs, I found myself thinking about everything—my past, my present, and what I wanted for the future. I was essentially practicing what Corey suggests: reflecting on my emotions and experiences.

I absolutely love traveling to escape reality; there’s nothing quite like packing my bags and heading somewhere beautiful. During my trips, I often find myself reflecting on life, feeling grateful for the experiences I’ve had and the people I cherish. In those peaceful moments, I also think about what I want to improve in my personal life, like finding more time for self-care. These moments of clarity help me return home with a fresh perspective and renewed motivation.

I love to journal as a form of self-care because it allows me to express my thoughts and feelings freely. It gives me the space to reflect, celebrate my wins, and work through any challenges. Plus, journaling serves as a creative outlet, letting me explore my thoughts in a way that feels therapeutic.

A key takeaway from this is that to truly care for others, we first need to prioritize our own well-being. Just like the airline safety guidelines, put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. This also goes for self-care, it is essential for effectively supporting those around us. When people focus on their physical and emotional health, they become more resilient, adaptable, and better equipped to handle challenges, ultimately benefiting both themselves and those they serve.
