She describes the land as a place that she loves. Mackellar uses many adjectives and personification to describe Australia. An example of personification is "her pitiless blue sky". This is giving the sky human characteristics by saying that she (the sky), has no pity. This could relate to the sky refusing to rain in the outback and having no cares for the thirsty plants and animals. This personifies Australia as a dry and baron place.

Mackellar uses alliteration to describe Australias dangerous characteristics, one example of this is where she uses "For Flood, Fire and Famine. "This emphasises the Australian weather and how it can change without warning and can be quite wild. She then says in the next "She pays us back threefold over the thirsty paddocks" This means even after all the harsh weather there is a brighter side to it, having exquisite scenery and environment. As you can tell Mackellar believes it is worth the it in the long haul.

The pirates also threatened to kill Anhs little brother by dangling him by his feet over the side of the boat. This creates a visual representation making people feel suspensed and nervous for the boys safety. A German boat soon rescued them and ruined their boat as they weren't allowed to save them unless they were sinking or in total danger. Anh loves Australia and doesn't remember much of Vietnam.
