Tris, also known as beatrice, is now sixteen and has to take the aptitude test to see what faction she really belongs in. But once her test results are revealed, she is told by Tori, the test instructor, she is divergent. Tris doesn't know what this means, but Troi tells her it's really dangerous. Once at the choosing ceremony, she chooses dauntless as her new faction. As Tris progresses throughout dauntless initiation, she has to face many hard challenges along the way to protect herself, and others.

Tris' divergence symbolizes hardships and secrets. Tris cannot tell anyone about her divergence, and it is hard to not tell the ones she trusts most about it.

The dauntless represent bravery. This is depicted in initiation when Tris has to jump into a pit, trusting that there is something to catch her at the bottom. It is also depicted when Tris has to jump off a train onto a roof during initiation.

Tris has to overcome her enemies. Peter, one of the initiates, is Tris's worst enemy. Not only that, she must work to be in the top seven transferred initiates. She has to go through many challenges against other initiates, even her friends, to get into dauntless.

Tris struggles with her fears. When Tris goes into the fear simulation for the first time, she is scared and can't calm down from her fears in the simulation. But when Tris goes into the simulation for a second time, she learns to stay calm and not let her fears get to her.
