The instances of Australians interacting with second screens while watching sporting events or television content has been on the rise, with three of every four social media user in Australia reportedly engaged in second screen. For brands, this presents a unique opportunity to augment consumer-viewing experiences by reaching consumers on multiple platforms, in this instance, the television and mobile screen. For example, Unilever’s ice cream brand, Cornetto, in 2011 encouraged consumers to Shazam its TV commercial that led them to its mobile site. The app then enabled consumers to send personalized messages to their friends through Facebook.
