Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1778 Catherine McAuley dedicated her life to caring for the poor, particularly women. She was an Irish religious sister who founded the Sisters of Mercy in 1831 in Ireland and England. This was also linked to when she established the House of Mercy in 1831, which was a facility built to house and educate poor women. Catherine McAuley was born in Dublin to James (father) and Elinor McAuley (mother). When both of her parents died Catherine, Mary (sister) and James (brother)were moved to live with protestant Relatives in Coolock, this continued for 20 years. After she developed the Sisters of Mercy, she and the sisters arrived in Australia in 1846. This then led to the congregation established schools and convents around the country and the opening of their first hospitals in Brisbane and Sydney.

They run 200 health facilities, 19 collages, 58 Schools and provided many other services that help people of any age. Pope John Paul II declared Sister Catherine McAuley “Venerable” in 1990. This is the first step on the path to sainthood. Catherine always said that “proof of love is deed.” As Catherine McAuley said, we can let our kind and caring deeds be the proof of our love for Jesus and others.

How was Catherine Mculey Priestly?

Catherine lived out the priestly ways of Jesus when she brought people of all generations together, she did this by establishing The House of Mercy and the Sisters of Mercy that brought all poor women together to be educated, so as to have a better chance at a good life. Some sacrifices Catherine had to make where Despite her birth into the upper middle classes, Catherine experienced considerable suffering and poverty in her formative years, including the death of her father at an early age, precarious financial situations, separation from family, the responsibility of caring for her mother and siblings, as well as religious discrimination and ridicule. These experiences could easily cause despair, but Catherine trusted in God whom she described as her “faithful provider”. She possessed a hopeful and indomitable spirit and acknowledged the blessings of people and circumstances. As the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, Catherine established certain guidelines that were to be followed. Here is the modern version of these core values:
Reverence - We honour the sacredness and dignity of every person.
Commitment to those who are poor - We stand with and serve those who are poor, especially those most vulnerable.
Justice - We foster right relationships to promote the common good, including the sustainability of Earth.
Stewardship - We honour our heritage and hold ourselves accountable for the human financial and natural resources entrusted to our care.
Integrity - We are faithful to who we say we are.

How was Catherine Mculey Prophetic?

Catherine lived out the Prophetic ways of Jesus when her group adopted a common timetable and dressed simply. This lifestyle and dedication to the poor led Catherine to consider establishing a religious congregation on September 8, 1830, aged 52 years. They were professed on December 12, 1831, and the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy was established. This was an act of speaking out against the injustice of the time, where women were discouraged to have any sort of education. Some things Catherine and the sisters of Mercy had to accept was the relevance of the education at the time. But the heart of a mercy education for Catherine was to develop the students religious understanding and openness to God's consolation.

It is still a way to promote the kingdom of God and the love we have to have to one another. This can be seen through modern-day communities, it reflects the principles of Catherine McAuley:
- Giving People a key to their own independence (educating poor women and giving them a second chance at life)
- paying particular attention to providing education and training for women and girls, recognizing their key role in society
- working in partnership with locals in order to respond to needs articulated by local people.
- Being informed by broader local contexts and a community to understand a situation and respond in an appropriate way.
- Always show love and respect to all.

Prayer 1:
My God, Look with compassion and mercy for those who are poor and grant us grace to do all that we can for their relief and comfort.
We ask your blessing this day - in the name and for the sake of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ
Amen
Prayer 2:
My God, I am yours today and all the days of my life. Help me to trust completely in your loving care and tender mercy. May I realize that whatever happens this day... we will do it together. Please take away any fears, anxieties or hurts that I may experience. And may I always be aware of your gift of hope delighting my heart...and entire being.
I pray this, my God and all - until that great day we meet face to face... forevermore Amen.
Prayer 3:
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or in spirit, and turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, For the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
The significant of these to Catherine Mcauley's work was that through preaching and praying she was able to overcome the boundaries and open up the House of Mercy and Sisters of Mercy.

A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,” he said, “and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.”
Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers? (Luke 10:30-37)

This relates to Catherine McCauley because we could see her as the Samaritan as women were not respected at that time, but she still tried her hardest to help people (especially women) in need.

These needs include education, housing, food and the teachings of God. An example of a group that continues her priestly, prophetic and kingly roles are The Sisters of Mercy, a group which she started back in Ireland 1831. They strive to uphold the beliefs of their foundress and have now managed to form a worldwide organization of Sisters of Mercy. The Sisters of Mercy achieve to continue with the priestly, prophetic and kingly roles of Jesus by maintaining the House of Mercy in multiple countries across the world that supplies/provide educational, religious and social services for women.

Investigation of church responses in the 19th century that inspired the reformer.

The church responded to these issues using the some of the guidelines of the rerum Novarum. This documents the rights and duties of the capital and labour, it was an encyclical issued by Pope Leo X111 on 15 May 1891.Some of the key ideas of the Rerum Novarum were:
Preferential Option for the Poor - known as justice for the poor it is everyone's responsibility. Preferential care should be shown to poor and vulnerable people, whose needs and rights are given special attention in Gods eyes.
Care for our Common Home - The Earth and all life on it are part of God’s creation. We are called to respect this gift. We are responsible for taking care of the world we live in for sharing all the wonders and resources the earth gives us.
The dignity of the Human Person - The dignity of every person, independent of ethnicity, creed, gender, sexuality, age or ability is important. No human being should have their dignity or freedom compromised. Poverty, hunger, oppression, and injustice make it impossible to live a life commensurate with this dignity.
Subsidiarity and Participation - All people have the right to participate in decisions that affect their lives. Subsidiarity requires that decisions are made by the people closest and most affected by the issues and concerns of the community.
The Common Good - the common good is reached when we worked together to improve the wellbeing of people in our society and the wider world. The rights of the individual to personal possessions and community resources must be balanced with the needs of the disadvantaged and dispossessed.
Solidarity - Everyone belongs to one human family, regardless of their national, religious, ethnic, economic, political and ideological differences.
These are all the above are some of the key ideas from the Rerum Novarum.

Some parts of the encyclical that may have inspired Catherine McAuley to work was the key idea of " The dignity of the human person". This is because it describes how no human being should have their freedom compromised. Catherine McAuley showed this by opening the House of Mercy, which enabled poor women to have a home and the right to a simple education, also on the teachings of God.
