The advantages of video study are many :
a. Different observers may focus on the same video as the basis of a shared analysis.
b. The use of multiple cameras may allow different aspects of the classroom to be captured simultaneously, and synchronization and the use of a mixer will enable the diﬀerent aspects to be related to each other.
c. Since the videos are permanent records of classroom activities, multiple analyses may be performed. The videos may be analyzed repeatedly, at any time and in any place.

The use of video is certainly very important to make more complete and effective observation. In particular, the video can capture attitudes and behaviors that escape simple visual observation. However, the video may have the risk of limiting too much observation of particulars by losing the more general context in which the didactic action takes place. For this reason it is important to use the video together with traditional free visual observation. I use both methodologies and I can say that, in this way, I can have a more complete and effective observation. My mentee feels comfortable and has the chance to observe any mistakes or strengths as students are more attentive to their way of doing and following the lessons.

I use video to show to my students new informatios about what they are learning but I've never film them.I only record them when I need to trainning their lecture.It is funny because I don't need to do an avaliation.They do their own avaliation and the result is wonderfull.

Folosirea videoclipurilor pentru pregatirea lectiilor in vederea obţinerii unui fed-back în buclă care să te autocorecteze pare o idée interesantă demnă de avut în vedere şi de încercat. În ce priveşte utilizarea acestei metode la observarea unei lecţii ţinute de un professor nou începător nu mi se pare o idée bună pentru că încalcă mai multe principii deontologice, stresează inutil profesorul începător, alterează comportamentul acestuia şi a clasei de elevi şi nu cred că rezultatele sunt relevante, în plus s-ar putea ca să nu surprindă esenţialul.

Using videos to prepare lessons to get a self-correcting loophole seems an interesting idea worth considering and trying. Regarding the use of this method in observing a lesson by a new beginner professor, I do not find it a good idea because it violates several ethical principles, unnecessarily stresses the beginner teacher, alters its behavior and the class of students, and I do not think the results are Relevant, in addition it may not surprise the essence.

I haven't been recorded as a mentee, neither as a mentor. But it is something I will definitely use because it will help me figure out what is wrong or not effective with teaching, little details that may improve the mentee tecnics. I have recorded a lesson recently as a mentor. My mentees and I wanted to analize the behaviour of pupils when they worked in small groups.
It was very interesting. We could see many things happening between pupils.
I was recorded several times when experimeting maths lessons with 5 other colleagues (it was a research). I didn't mind watching my lessons as we were all at the same level. I think the most important to feel at ease is TRUST.

Video recording can be an effective tool for observation, as it provides access to view of oneself while teaching and to various views of students which are not possible in another way. Watching it and replaying, one can gain consciousness of aspects of the teaching and learning procedure not seen before. If used to its potential it can be very useful for reflection and re framing of practice

Nevertheless, the use of video needs to be integrated into the purpose of observation, linked to the focus questions being explored and its use (why, for what, when, who, for how long) must be agreed with mentee

I have never had the experience of a lesson recording technique either as a recorder or the recorded one, during any class i have attended. Undoubtedly watching yourshelf for the first time might be quite strange, but at the same time it can be an effective and useful teaching tool. At first, it can help mentee to gain an understanding what works well and what doesn't, why the lesson plan worked or not and give specific ideas on how to improve your teaching style. Recorded lessons can also be a useful tool for self-evaluation. Watching yourshelf teach you are able to honestly assess your strenghts and weaknesses, enables you to focus and improve specific aspects of your teaching.
However, the use of video needs to be integrated into the purpose of observation. For example mentor and mentee have to outline exactly what they want to get from recording (engagement and attitude of students, teaching strategies, answers, tasks, communication, attention levels e.t.c).

I think that using videos sometimes is good and sometimes could be quite risky. I consider the video just informal, formal most of the times. Things that doesn't work could be the expectations. Maybe the mentee consider that the practic part is been missing, so they only could imagine what mentor reffers to and put their ideas on the paper just listening an informal video about a certain theme. I have used several times video recordings for mentoring a mentee or myself (because I mentor myself a lot). For my activity as a teacher and as a mentor it was a very useful experience watching the video recordings. I have noticed some aspects I would have wanted to change in my teaching. My mentee had the chance to observe himself/herself and we have some very constructive debriefings after we watched the video, together. I always try to be positive, to let the mentee to draw the conclusions and to speak about his/her work. I try never being judgmental, I try to guide. An aspect to be considered: until the mentor and the mentee will have been got used with the video recordings, we have to consider the psychological aspects of being recorded during an activity. We may have emotions or we may seem to be fake.

In spite I think it´s very important using this technology , it doesn´t work if coach and coachee (mentor and mentee) did n´t talk previously what are the points to see in video. As Rachel said, we can´t see in video everything what is going on in a lesson observation. It´s necessary select by both the goals: the students´behavors? ! Or the student´s understanding matter?! Or which point the teacher´s strategy works in the class?! I think if I watched my lesson by video I would see things that I won´t in the real lesson, and maybe I would see some mistakes that I didn´t become in the real lesson. Sometimes I use video with my pupils, because they need make feedback to improve their learning. Sometimes I use it to praise good actions or good posture.

Using video in mentoring is beneficial for both mentor and the mentee. It helps focus on strengths and weaknesses of the teaching afterwards, discussing them and find ways to improve it. As my sister says (she uses the recordings to discuss with students at the university while they practise in a microteaching environment), the mentee has the chance to see himself teaching and identify things that went wrong, observe himself and then discuss with the mentee about what had happened and what to improve. Videos in my teaching play a major role and have many advantages but also many critical issues. Realizing videos quickly and without having to become experienced operators and editors is therefore a fundamental requirement for teachers and students. For this use, the screencast technique, which makes it easy to make educational videos, recording what's on our PC screen and our voice commentary. At the end of the school year, my second high school students are completing an "Erasmus project", using this technique.

Learning to teach requires student teachers to have a level of self-confidence to overcome the inevitable exposure they feel in front of classes and more experienced teachers. I have no specific experience of using video in mentoring. It could be also because I do not like being recorded, so I try not to record any colleagues.
Nevertheless, I make a huge use of videos with my students (especially in case of eTwinning or Erasmus+ projects) and I know that they are not only very motivating but also very useful to stimulate debates and discussions (for a metacognitive learning).
I will definitely try to apply it to my mentoring sessions...

I have never used video in mentoring but I think it could be very useful. It is true that a camera cannot capture everything but it can capture something that might escape the mentor’s attention. On the other hand, the fact that a mentee can see himself/herself teaching is really helpful and might make him/her realise some things without the mentor having to point them out. I think that this is actually a step towards the mentee’s independence from the mentor.

As Rachel said it is important to make the use of video a routine as it can be really daunting in the first place. I have often shown to my mentees videos of peers as an analytical tool of what can be done or not and they loved it is a great way of showing plenty of details we don't think about or see when starting teaching. I am going to use video in my mentoring practice more now as it is so easy nowadays and the young teachers are more familiar with coping with their image reflection, but again it always comes down to trust and you can't force someone to do it, some people may need more time to accept the challenge.

Although I do not have any experience with video mentoring, I do agree that it can be a very useful tool, as watching from aside at yourself, you can simply find your bigger or smaller mistakes both in the behaviour and the steps of teaching. The example, given by Rachel about the unconscious repetition of unnecessary words, is a very common flaw of inexperienced teachers that can spoil the impression of the whole process of teaching.
On the other hand, video can help the mentor analyse in depth the observed lesson.

I am no mentor but I am using videos during my lessons, or better, I flip some issues using videos and posting them for my students. It works and if it works for students it shoould also work for teacher students.
What is important is to share this practice with the mentee in advance. If videorecording is considered a relevant tool to be used, the mentor's job is to explain the mentee all the reasons why this is a good practice. Then he must ask him/her if he agrees with it, hoping that he/she will.

Having no experience so far, I realize that using video recordings may be rather useful in mentoring but one has to weigh out pros and cons.

I'm not used to film the lesson and I've never used video in my mentoring this year. But last school Year, I wanted to make a video of my pupils while their exposition of Egyptian times. I planned a self evaluation schedule they have to use to take notes about how they perform, how they move their body and they use their Language and above all, in which way they react to the mates listening to them, how they took care of their Learning needs during the exposition and the discussion. I have never recorded the open lessons I have lectured with the commissions to get the didactic degrees. In my opinion, making a video can be very useful for the mentors, because this way they can transmite very important messages. However, there are things that you have to be very careful with, like the quality of the sound, that needs to be very good. I had to prepare videos of short sequences of the lesson for our teacher meetings .It was funny and the kids love being filmed. Using video for mentoring is quite useful, because it is probably the most accurate way to record a lesson and it provides constant and unlimited information, as you can analyse it over and over and reflect on different participants, resources, gestures, attitudes, environments…

However, on a technical way it can be challenging because, ideally we would need more than one camera and we must ensure image and audio quality.

In Portugal we have another problem, as in many schools we are forbidden to take any kind of images or audio records.

We will probably be more frank and sincere because we are not face to face with the person. For me audio and video recordings are invaluable sources of accurate information on the actual teaching process as they provide objective first-hand data for analysing individual teacher behaviour. They can be used to obtain general impressions or alternatively to focus on specific concerns such as teacher talk, naturalistic interactions and verbatim utterances.

Although the presence of the video recorder is intrusive and may contribute to substantial changes in regular behaviour patterns, I would strongly recommend its use for teacher training purposes.

I've only had little experience about having my own lesson being recorded, however, I consider video recordings as a very helpful and authentic tool to be able to review a lesson and a lot of things which might otherwise go unnoticed. The few times I've seen recordings of meetings, presentations or lessons which I had carried out, were indeed very effective as I was able to understand what it felt like being a student or part of the audience, observing me. I was able to observe my own presentation skills and to appreciate the different variations in tone, questioning and listening which takes place when a teacher is carefully leading the learning of a group of students. I think it is important to use the video routinely as suggested in this course, so that the video does not hinder the usual flow of the lesson, but captures the real dynamics of the learning process. Mentors could have a strategic role in capturing important aspects of lessons and focus on areas which are either strengths or which could provide a backdrop for further discussions, development or improvement. Mentors could also be trained to use various technological tools to be able to process videos and use them for professional development.

I have not yet used video with my trainee teachers but as a classroom teacher, I found it incredibly powerful seeing myself teach and being able to revisit particular key events within my lesson and analysing the impact I was having on pupil progress at different points. Video recording used as a means, for instance, to study behavioral attitudes of pupils during a class might be of great help in account of the awareness it creates in them. It works also nicely when you ask them to record (on their own or after classes) some sentences or small dialogues when learning a foreign language. When I was teaching Italian in an American University during my PhD I was regularly video-recorded by the departmental supervisor and I found a very useful practice as I had the opportunity to watch myself more than once. Moreover, the supervisor gave me a form that I had to fill with comments and reflections about my teaching. The form was very helpful has it offered me the opportunity to focus better in what I had to analyze and comment. After filling the form I had an appointment with the supervisor and we discussed about my and her comments and highlighted the things I had to improve or change in my approach. It is a bit a harder in Italy to video-record a lesson because of privacy rules on students, but if the parents sign a form the students can be recorded. Moreover, the recording should be done from the end of the classroom so that the faces of the students is not visible.

I do remember seeing some videos of English lessons during my training as a teacher when still at university and I found them great! I could notice and realise many aspects of the lesson I wouldn't have otherwise. I think this is the greatest advantage of it: you can rewind it as many times as you want/ need and analyse different aspects which can sometimes be overlooked by both mentor and the mentee in order to improve them.

I have used a video after asking my mentee’s permission, but not what parts I should focus on for it was more practical to set it up on a tripod and sit at the back of the classroom to observe and take notes. It is rather hard to make video a part of our teaching mentoring routines since we need a parents’ permission to do so. It did trigger some silly waving and smiling at the camera and remarks, such as, “it is not allowed Ms..” since my students are over 15 years of age. I assured them that it showed only their back and it won’t be published. So, although it helped us partly with our talk, I’m a bit skeptical about using it again for if I ask the parents’ permission and one or two out of 25 won’t accept it I cannot use it.

However, I have been using video recording more and more in my teaching and agree with Rachel stating that the more you use it the more confident you become and thus the more natural the lesson recording will be. My own experience is watchig video recordings of other teachers. As a teacher this inspired me to improve my teaching methods.
As a mentor I will use video recording because I think this will help my mentees to critique their teaching with enhanced autonomy and with a more realistic perspective. Additional video recording will improve their teaching through providing feedback and allowing them to reflect intensively on classroom evidence generated by video..

That video had a great impact for both teacher and pupils because you can see that sometimes, the way you speak, listen or respond to a situation looks quite different from outside. In my country , teachers have to ask for parental permission in order to video record students. Though I have used video recording in my classes, I have never video recorded a whole lesson so far. It would be interesting to do it, as many aspects could be more carefully observed by me and the mentee and it would bring precious proofs on how the teaching went. However, to be successful, video recording should be part of their routine, otherwise some of the students might not behave the way they usually do, as not all of them feel comfortable with being filmed.

Like many other colleagues I have no particular experience in using videos for mentoring and I’ve never used it for assessment of mentees. Nevertheless I think it could be useful to use videos for a deeper collaboration even if many of us feel uncorfortable when they know they are recorded.

I am an eTwinning ambassador of my Region in Italy and I often use videos with my students during our eTwinning projects and also in case of Erasmus+ activities. In both cases I could register their effectiveness as well as a mean to a metacognitive reflection about peformances and choices which have been done and also as big instrument to raise and sustain their motivation.
