She cared about each of us as students but also as humans, and was genuinely invested in helping us grow socially, academically, and emotionally. She still checks in on me every now and then, and her love for each of her students is so clear. When I was in high school she never let me quit or feel sorry for myself. She taught me that I can overcome anything if I work hard. She didn't have any kids of her own so she took me and my bestfriend in as her kids. Even today she still give me the best advice and life lesson. She's one of the reasons why I'm the teacher that I am today. However, one of the most impactful teachers I had was Mr. Hewitt, my high school English teacher. I had him for 6 semesters in a row (Pre-AP, AP Lit, and AP Lang), so we built a really solid relationship. He held me to a high standard and challenged me to improve every day; even though he was very laid back and conversational. He taught me that teachers could have high standards without necessarily being strict. When I turned in my first college paper, the feedback I got was, "100/100 - This class will quite obviously be too easy for you." He was very passionate about the subject matter, and would get excited explaining concepts. He had great classroom management but at the same time did unexpected activities. Some of the impromptu, non biology activities included snowshoeing around the school, cooking us bacon and eggs, and going on impromptu field trips within walking distance. He made it a point to greet everyone each day and engage you in conversation. For example, my second grade teacher had my class send me get well soon cards when I broke my arm. In middle school my sixth grade teacher would give me tasks to help him with after school. When I was in high school I had a teacher where I would spend my mornings in her room just talking about life not necessarily school. She was extremely kind and caring and created a classroom environment that felt like a family. She always had fun, engaging activities in class, made space for a fun Friday recess or game time, and made the entire class personalized gifts at the end of the school year. I remember feeling so seen and loved by her. I remember feeling so validated in her classroom. It was a safe space where everyone was free to express opinions and values, knowing that they would be accepted. I also noticed that she was willing to stand up to administration when she felt students were treated unfairly. She modeled what it means to advocate for your students.

She was supportive, encouraging, and made learning fun. She always came up with really engaging projects that pushed me to challenge myself and grow, and she was always willing to listen and offer advice/help in whatever way I needed at the time.

During this time, my mom was stationed in Iraq, as she was apart of the national guard so she was on deployment. I was living with my grandparents in a different city at the time. Ms. Bartel was so kind and caring. She made an effort to talk with me about my feelings and my situation every day. She also allowed for me to talk with my mom during the school day, considering there was a different time zone in the middle east and my mom could only call at certain times, Ms. Bartel was always incredibly accommodating. We made gifts to send to the troops and she always made sure that she focused on her relationships with students. Ms. Fred started every class with trivia questions and a few minutes asking us what events we had going on that day. She would often then show up to sporting events and concerts after school, but more importantly, even if she wasn't there, she remembered to ask about them the next day. She genuinely cared about us as humans outside of her classroom. She also baked us brownies every test day, which doesn't hurt. :) She technically wasn't allowed to, so she would "just leave the pans out" and if we happened to take one then that was on us.
