Rwanda is ethnically diverse with groups including the Hutu (Bantu), Tutsi (Hamitic), and Twa (Pygmy) people.

In the 1600s, Tutsi King Ruganzu Ndori led Tutsis migration into what is now Rwanda, already inhabited by the Twa and Hutu peoples

In 1984, when Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana and Burundian President Cyprien Ntaryamira were killed by Tutsi extremists, the Hutu government began sponsoring the genocide of the Tutsi people.

From April 1994 to July, the extremists leading the Hutu government illustrated the mass killings of the Tutsi people.

About 500,000 Tutsi people were executed, and all that opposed the Hutu government were victimized as well.

Although perpetrators who fled to surrounding nations deny the genocide occurred, eye witnesses and survivors of the mass killings are supported by the truth behind the genocide.

Bernadette was a girl who lived with her mother, father, and 9 brothers and sisters. She was 13 years old when her eldest brother and father were shot in front of her, and she was raped in front of the rest of her family.

After being raped for the first time, Bernadette and her sister were kidnapped by the Hutu soldier, and forced into being two of his “many wives”.

“One of the rapists said he would protect my family and I.

He took my sister and me to his house promising he would bring the rest of the family there later.”

As the genocide began, the Americans began fleeing Rwanda. They felt mass murder was going to happen no matter what, so it did not matter if they left.

The UN gathered over 1,300 soldier to confront the perpetrators; however, national leaders began taking their men away. As the Rwandans begged for help, the UN soldiers were ordered to shoo them away.

Save the Children is an organization that provides kids across the world with healthcare, education, and a chance to grow and flourish no matter the situation they have to grow up in.

Specifically in Rwanda, Save the Children is working to reunite children with their families that they lost during the genocide. They also work to increase emergency response and provide healthcare in rural villages across the nation.

Within a year, Save the Children has given vital nourishment to 2,750 kids, protected 55,394 from harm, and supported 22,975 through their period of healing.

Save the Children works with multiple countries facing natural, economical, and political disasters. They are always looking for help.

Although most Americans fled Rwanda as the genocide broke out, Carl Wilkens stayed behind to help the Rwandan people through this political crisis.

Being the only American who stayed behind, Wilkens headed the Rwandan office of Adventist Development and Relief Agency for victims. He also provided food and shelter for affected families.

As an upstander, Carl Wilkens courageously put the good of others before himself during the Rwandan genocide. He left his wife and children in Kenya, and took in other families to save them from the Huti officers’ persecutions. He also provided food and nourishment for the victimized families.

It sickens me to think the leaders of a nation can persecute an entire ethnic group due to their beliefs and customs.
