I know this because when I use the new groups above or below method or when I draw a proof drawing, I see that I need to make a new group of a hundred. When I add the ones place, I get 6+1=7. When I add the tens place, I get 3+8=11. I put the second 1 in my answer and I put the first 1 in my hundreds place to add to the other hundreds. Then I add the hundreds, and I get 1+5+4 = 10.
