She was 17 years old and encounters Mildred as he is walking home from work. Clarisse approaches Guy with a different mindset than he has seen before. She asks him a series of questions such as is he is happy. He gets frustrated at it at first, but then he takes those questions into heart and consideration. Clarisse's family is different than Guys average family. Clarisse's family, rather than staring at a television screen, they sit together and talk with one another.  She is very openminded about the world around her and is very intelligent, informing Guy that firemen were supposed to put out fires, instead of ignite them. Guy begins to mirror Clarisse in a way. She is very important to Guys development, although she was present for a short time, as she makes him start asking questions and analyze the world in which he lives in.

She first makes an appearance when Guy comes home and sees her passed out on their bed. Mildred had overdosed on sleeping pills, forced to have her stomach pump with new blood. I believe Mildred overdosed on purpose and she acts as though it was on accident so she does not frighten her husband. Mildred seems to be as unhappy as Guy, she is portrayed as very forgetful and innocent but her actions make it seem like she is hiding a secret. Mildred wants to fit in with their society the best she can in order to be happy and live a fulfilled life, so that is what she attempts to do. She hides her feelings but in reality she seems as though she does not want to live the life she is living. For example, Mildred seemed very superficial  when Guy pulls out all of his hidden books. She acted very surprised, but as his wife who spends a lot of time at home, how does she not notice that many hidden books? I believe the reason she overdosed on sleeping pills that night was because she found Guy's secret pile of books. She wanted to forget about what she saw so she overdoses on pills. Overall, Mildred's character is portrayed as very shallow and shown as a basic woman in the society they live in.

He doesn't really think about what he's doing is right or wrong when he's doing his job. However one day a young girl named Clarisse makes him question his life decisions. his friendship with Clarisse makes him realizes he feels a sense of emptiness and disaffection though he doesn't quite know why. He feels as though he has a loveless, meaningless marriage and he can't help but feel intrigued of the McClellan family whom he watches through his windows. He expresses his guilt for hiding books and realizes that there is something wrong with this cruel society and he's not happy because something's missing. His life is ultimately without meaning and he's one of the few in this dystopian world to realize that something needs to change.

However, what it falls into is the sad and depressing dystopian society.  These kind of "alternate universe" books are not a new theme, as many have come up with different ways the world can be run. I also would like to look into the interesting ways all of these worlds relate to one another.  Many characters of these stories are very unhappy, even if they don't realize it. Montag, Clarisse, Mildred, all seemed very unsatisfied with their lives. A world built to create happiness for its people actually breeds sadness. In every instance, a government that is praised by the people, ends up oppressing them the most. They all run on the notion that they are doing what is best for its people, while at the same time completely belittling and constraining them. Although, these people are groomed into falling into this self proclaimed perfect society when it is anything but such. A sense of false happiness is also a commonality.

Although it is a serious topic, the novel takes death and suicide more lightly. For instance, when those medical technicians came to Guy Montag's house, drained her stomach, and had another suicide call to answer to. What is even more disturbing is their dialogue with Guy, and how lightly and complacently they take suicide. Obviously, if suicide is such a common thing in this society, there must be something wrong with it. This society is supposed to destroy everything that interferes with happiness. Citizens mask themselves as being happy, but it's all a lie.

Rather than stopping the fires, the designated firemen ignite fires. I believe that they are seen as an authority, as they are the ones making sure no one goes against the normalities. As a result, the firemen burn books to ensure that all of the possible knowledge that would disrupt the present order is destroyed. This is a normal part of the Fahrenheit 451 community; it seems as if no one questions these acts. A young character, Clarisse,  begins to alter the main character, Guy Montag's feelings about his job as a fireman. Early in the book, the girl questions, "'Is it true that long ago firemen put fires out instead of going to start them?'" This question sticks with Guy and clearly makes an impact on his character as the story progresses. This part is also interesting to read because it shows readers that the people of the society are truly oblivious and hidden from the world before the heavy restrictions imposed. It highlights the strength and power that the government holds over everybody else, even the firemen who are the ones carrying out the burning of the books.
