After a disaster such as this one, people may collect rubbish from the streets, to fix or rebuild their homes, because of the damage done. Their lives primarily revolve around the climate, and location they are living in.

Secondly, economical factors are apparent in this photos. During the day, people in this environment would go to the market and earn money through buyers. With that money, they would then use a part of it to buy ingredients to cook food for their family, and keep what’s left of it. If they were lucky, they would be able to afford meat, such as fish or chicken; however, they frequently manage to afford vegetables and rice.

Thirdly, many illustrations of environmental factors can be seen. These houses are crammed together and poorly constructed, suggesting overcrowded living conditions. This might lead to the transmission of diseases, particularly respiratory infections or viruses. Secondly, foundations of these houses are slim and have the ability to give into natural disasters easily. Floods are most common and occur often in Indonesia, and due to the confined spaces between each home, the majority of the community could be damaged, as one house collapses over another. There are open drains full of waste and rubbish, that have risen with water from the rains of Jakarta. This can attract rats which can cause severe diseases, such as Rat-bite fever, and leptospirosis, which can result in liver and kidney damage. Rats spread around diseases due to overcrowdedness which would physically make a situation worse.

Lastly, many political factors are reflected in the image above. The government controlling the area should provide more care to their living environment and pay more attention to their lives. The government could improve the living conditions, using the money from income tax.

Houses are crammed and poorly constructed suggesting overcrowded living conditions.Which may lead to a poor supply of living essentials and cause residents to work harder and try to earn more money to try and support the family.Since the living situation is hard there might not be a chance that earning money is very hard. There are open drains full of waste and rubbish piled above houses. This attracts might rats, flies and mosquitoes which may carry diseases causing residents to be ill. Due to residents living situations the diseases unfortunately spread quickly amongst the town.Causing long term disabilities and may lead citizen an even harder ability to work/earn money and due to this they may not have great access to medication. The shanty town here is located by railway tracks this is because people cant afford proper land and have to built it on unwanted land. The government doesn't seem to be trying to change and develop the peoples lives. They just seem to be wreaking the shanty towns forcing the people to build their houses in other areas. The government should be trying to take care and look after the people making sure they control their hygiene and should try and provides some education for the people living in these conditions
https://chinadigitaltimes.net/2014/03/china-invest-162b-shantytowns/

This will have an impact on children living in squatter settlements could possibly have difficulty finding places to go to school or being employed in the future. The trash also can attract unwanted insects and rodents which may also contain vector-borne diseases. The illnesses of the residents may also lead to it being hard getting a job as no employer would want someone sick which would then develop in scarcity of money for the family. Another problem the sicknesses could lead to would be the fact that many squatter settlements lack proper medical treatment which further could lead to deaths of residents. These deaths can further lead to social unrest and public demonstrations which is a political factor.

Small and crammed houses provide less space for people to live and do things and children to play in. The houses are located next to each other with not much privacy from the neighbors. This might lead to problems and conflicts among people as some neighbors’ actions might disturb the others due to lack of boundaries, and consequently, crime rates might also increase as a result of this. Furthermore, the houses do not look strong nor stable. Some parts of the houses are supported by thin sticks. In bad weather, these houses might collapse and harm people. These people might also lose their homes.

The houses are located near an extremely dirty river. There are a few pipes from the houses that lead to the river which might carry human waste and other wastes polluting it. The sides of the river are covered with mold, moss, and fungus. The river becomes a breeding place for germs and bacteria. These people might use the dirty river water for drinking, cleaning and washing their clothes. This polluted living environment can cause people to contract many kinds of airborne and waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, hepatitis, typhoid, tuberculosis, and diphtheria. As they are exposed to a dirty environment, there is a higher chance of people having disabled children.

The picture of the settlement shows that people who live there might be extremely poor and not earn nor spend much money. They probably do not have good jobs and therefore cannot afford a better housing.

The people in this settlement also might not afford to have good medical care. This along with unhygienic environment might lead to serious illnesses and premature deaths.

It is likely that people in this settlement do not have access to good education. This will prevent them from getting good jobs which will make it hard for them to improve their economic conditions. This might go for generations which will impact the whole community. Soon, the whole community including the younger generations will not get good jobs and will not earn good money.

The poor living conditions of the settlement might imply that the government has not paid very good attention to the environment. They will need to work with people to keep the environment clean. The government also might not have given good attention to the poor. They will need to help the unfortunate build better housing and improve their lives.

There are a lot of rubbish scattered in the river and next to the houses. This will affect the people living in the houses because, the rubbish might attract rats and might spread diseases, if one person got a disease, it might spread to them. Because they don’t have enough money to wash clothes with clean water, they will wash their clothes in the dirty river full of rubbish, children might also play their because their parents don’t have enough money to buy toys for them. The rubbish can also bring germs and bacteria. This might also affect how they live, they might be too tired to work or find food maybe because their job is far from their house, and might lead them to death.

The houses are poorly built and small.

These people have to live with many negative factors. For example, their shacks are unstable, and during bad weather, their houses could collapse and they would have to rebuild them with the small amount of money that they have.

An example of an environmental factor is the flooding that occurs during a wet season. The flooding is very visible in this photo, and you can see that these villagers have attempted to heighten their houses but is clearly unstable.

Another negative factor is the visible litter floating around in the river. This suggests that they have nowhere to store rubbish and therefore, they have to litter in the river. This is not good for the people who live here because the river would flood during a tropical storm and the rubbish may get into their house and attract rats leading to disease.

We can also observe that these people are living together and squashed together. This could badly affect them because if someone caught an illness, it would spread and unfortunately they do not have access to proper medication due to poverty.

https://www.quora.com/What-are-some-slum-areas-in-Jakarta

If this continues, their immunity system will worsen and because they are not finding enough food they will possibly die of hunger and illness.

Squatters normally do not own the land they are on, hence, the housing is temporary. There is no proper sanitation and therefore they use either drains or the river (picture above) both for their waste and human excrement. Lack of social programmes to help the communities to move into proper housing with sanitation.

The unhygienic conditions cause disease and sickness. Very poor communities live in such squalid conditions. Normally, such areas have no access to electricity. This will give them no contact with other people from other countries, cities and areas. Lack of education and medical facilities for people living in these areas. Children growing up in these areas will find it difficult to get permanent jobs when they grow up.

As there is no education, there are not a lot of job opportunities for children growing up in these areas.

Without governmental help to assist such areas it is extremely unlikely that conditions will improve. In the future, Jabodetabek, will have to try and get rid of most of their rural areas. This will improve on how JABODETABEK will do in the future.
