Ms. Newsom, my 9th and 12th grade English teacher, is one educator who made a tremendous difference in my life. After a difficult time in middle school, I was left wondering if I’d ever be successful in high school. Ms. Newsom offered all students a fresh start when we entered her classroom, and she took time to get to know each student and invest herself in our individual learning goals. She stood out from other teachers by allowing us choice in what we read and encouraging us to respond to and analyze texts through visual mediums like film and drawing. Ms. Newsom made a point to attend school plays, athletic events, ROTC meetings, and other extracurricular events that her students participated in, and she incorporated our interests into our classroom. My little brother, who is five years younger than me, was also a student of Ms. Newsom’s, and he still talks about how she was one of the only people who made him feel like he belonged at school. 

One fun fact about me and Ms. Newsom: we both had the same first job as teenagers, operating the ride Thunder Road at Carowinds in Charlotte. Now, I’m following in her footsteps to become a high school English teacher.

Mr. Perks was a fantastic English teacher, but it was clear that he taught for his love of working with students more than his love for the subject. He had a great sense of humor and told funny stories to make the class enjoyable and relatable, and often had us doing some activity like making maps of our childhood neighborhoods, beatnik poetry readings, making a class book of students' short stories, or acting out plays. He had the ability to make each student feel important and included which was significant to me as I was a shy introvert and usually felt invisible to teachers. Once I was going through a particularly hard time, and not only did Mr. Perks immediately notice, he went out of his way to make sure I got the help and support I needed. That event was a significant influence in my decision to pursue teaching- how he knew each one of his hundreds of students so well that he could recognize when one needed support. Ms. Adams recently retired, so she had taught a long time, and she operated her classroom in an old-school fashion. For instance, Ms. Adams did have students memorize certain concepts (e.g., multiplication tables); however, she was not a classroom authoritarian. Ms. Adams never humiliated a student in front of their peers, as some "traditional" teachers do. Another defining aspect of Ms. Adam's classroom is how hands-on it was. That year, our class performed a play (for reading class), incubated chicks (humanely, for science), and had a tent full of caterpillars that would turn into butterflies (also for science). Ms. Adam's classroom was fun while also being an environment for learning by experience.
I remember what Ms. Adams taught me because I made memories in her classroom. In my own practice, I am taking Ms. Adam's example as a reminder that learning can be fun, and it can also be caring.

Mr. Leavins was my 8th grade ELA teacher. He was funny, patient, and smart. He was eager to share his love for learning with us. He roared with laughter so loud you could hear him clear down the hallway. Mr. Leavins was an awesome writer and always nurtured my love for poetry. What I remember most about Mr. Leavins is that he was the first to suggest that I major in English for College. That suggestion empowered me to know that I was capable of becoming a writer. 

What made this teacher special?  

Mr. Leavins was special because he was genuinely interested in who we were as people, not just students. He made sure we understood how important it was for us to empower ourselves through education so we could live a fulfilling, purposeful life. I really appreciate that Mr. Leavins always found something positive to say to us or about us, no matter how rough a day we were having. We could always count on him to see and expect us at our best. He made it okay to have to reset, or, to need improvement. 

How did they operate in their classroom? 

Mr. Leavins operated his classroom on a 'togetherness for improvement' basis. He encouraged us to always lend a helping hand to one another. We would work as one large group or as partners to support one another through the reading, writing, and research processes. Even during independent learning, if one of us would need assistance, it was up to the entire group to decide who was best fit to help.  

How did they make you feel?  

Mr. Leavins made me feel seen, capable, and above average. He made me realize that I have something unique to offer.

How are you taking this person into your own practice?

I am adopting the 'togetherness for improvement' structure into my own practice to set as the foundation for my classroom culture. In my course, our own classroom will always be our first resource.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Mrs. Riddley sounds awesome! It's really hard, for some of us, to engage in Math and understand the content. I'm glad Mrs. Riddley was able to nurture you through that, and such the life milestone of learning to drive. Now that is how you demonstrate building relationship! The "build relationships first, teach second" attitude is the approach that teachers value whom change lives. You're going to ROCK IT in your career!
