Was competition or cooperation stressed?

My parents were both athletes in high school, my mom went on to play college basketball. Both my mom and dad are incredibly intelligent and they believe in their kids. Although my siblings and I have learned to work as a team in instances, competition was always stressed between us. We still compete to see who can do the best academically, athletically, the usual.

What was the attitude toward the elderly?

Something I am very grateful to have learned from the example of my parents is respect for our elders. We let my mom's dad live with us for the last few years of his life. I learned a lot from him, it has impacted my life forever. My dad also makes it a point to visit his parents at least once a week to check in, help out with chores around the house, and just learn from them. I have learned that our elders are how we can learn to avoid the pitfalls of the past and become who we are truly capable of being. They are essencial to our growth and to society.

In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

Informal for sure. We have our own sense of humor and it comes out whenever we feel like it, especially at church and more serious events it seems. Our dad usually cuts it off, but not before he joins in for a few jokes or so. In terms of social events, if it's an option, you can usually find us dressed down. I like to think that we integrate people in the family pretty well, we're not afraid to include everyone in the joking around.

On the subject of our sense of humor. We love impressions of our favorite tv and movie characters. Quick thinking whether that be a sarcastic response, or taking a line from a favorite movie or tv show always cracks us up. We try not to make fun of other people, but sometimes we like to impersonate each other which gets everyone cracking up.

Was conflict dealt with in a direct or indirect manner?

We may be informal, but my parents are direct people. If there is a problem, my parents do not wait to solve it. They will confront the child or behavior that isn't meeting up to par and put an end to it. They are very communicative and are willing to talk everything out with you, to help you understand their point of view, and to encourage to you keep on the straight and narrow.
