I remember giving students one worksheet after another so I could listen to the radio with my headphones in order to get updates throughout the day. We were not allowed to tell the students. My son was in high school in Nashua, one of my kids was with me at the school I was teaching in and the other at my Daycare Center - Kiddie Depot, but I remember wanting to go get the other two...for fear something was going to happen to them. Unfortunately, a girl in my son's class was the daughter of the pilot of one of the planes that went into the World Trade Center. The art teacher came into my fourth grade classroom for my prep period and told me to go look at the TV in the staff room. I saw what happened and frantically tried to reach my parents who were due to fly to Rome that morning. Fortunately their flight was grounded. It was my first year here as an inclusion specialists. I was summoned to the classroom door and the adult whispered in my ear to inform me of the first plane. I then in turn whispered in the ear of the classroom teacher. News trickled through the building starting in the middle school wing. As the TV's announced the happenings, the knowledge would go secretly from adult to adult throughout the building. Parents began to arrive and pull their children out of our classrooms.
My worst memory was when one of the last remaining six students asked two questions: Why are parents taking kids home so early and why aren't my parents coming for me? What a horrible day in our history, one we can NOT forget or hide from! At the end of the group, a staff member returned to the building and told us about the horrific scenes she had seen on television at one of her client's homes (pictures that are no longer shown on TV). At that point, we all became glued to the TV, and by the next day, we began to here the news of all the people in the local communities that died on 9/11. We continued on with the lesson - the kids were not told anything at that time. She dropped off her second graders and we continued along as if nothing had happened. The thing that gave me the chills was when the buses came to pick up the students early, they each had an American flag in their window. Not sure we all really realized how much our world would change that day. My parents made sure that I didn’t see videos of it on the news or pictures in the newspaper. From my parents I do know that it was my first day of preschool. My mother was actually the one who told my preschool teacher what happened. Almost 20 years later we ran into her and she knew exactly who we were. It’s safe to say that she probably associates my mom with that memory and that is how she was able to remember both of us that many years after. The custodial office was where the IT office is now. They had a TV in their office. My co-worker, Peggy Carlson (my very best friend) and myself kept taking turns leaving the office to watch the TV. It was so very sad and unreal. Then the phones started ringing off the wall and there were so many parents that were dismissing their children. Everyone had so much fear of what was going to happen next. It made you want your loved ones close by your side. It’s a day in history that will never be forgotten. Just like the Pink Floyd song, “there was no planes in the sky” for days after. My heart goes out to all who lost their lives on the horrific day.
