Militarism also built up the  tension and fear among the great powers of Europe. Britain at the time had large standing armies. which caused Kaiser Wilhelm II to hate and envied Britain for having a stronger army than his. he increased the production of ships. Britain responded by building even more ships. This started a race for building more and more ships and it created a tension between both nations. all of this conflicts resulted in Europe building its nations army and navy.
Alliance:an agreement between two or more nations to cooperate and defend each other.
the upsides of an alliance would be that you have someone to defend and help you during wars. but the downside could be that they might turn their back on you.
Imperialism: a policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically,socially and economically.
imperialism set the stage for both conflicts because they were both worried about Germany taking land in the middle east, imperialism had a great side effect of why the "great war" became a world war. As European countries gained more colonies those colonies became committed to help the "motherland" in the event of the war. 
Nationalism: love of country and wiliness to sacrifice for it.
Nationalism was a factor in the causing of the wars because it caused countries to become more aggressive towards other nations. it was nationalism that encouraged Gavrillo Princip to shoot dead the Australian heir. Gavrilo Princip, 19 year old Serbian and member of the Black Hand assassinated Archduke Ferdinand. The Black Hand was a secret society that committed to ridding Bosnia of Australian rule. Because the assassin was a Serbian, Austria decided to use to murders as an excuse to punish Serbia. Austria presented Serbia with demands but Serbia refused to take the demands that Austria settled to not negotiate with Serbia and settled on war.
World War ll: Germany's Invasion of Poland: On September 1, 1939, Hitler had a surprise attack on Poland. German tanks and troop trucks rumbled across the Polish border. Also German aircraft and artillery began a merciless bombing of Poland's capital, Warsaw. France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. By that time Poland fell, after Hitler's victory, he annexed the western half of Poland. The German invasion of Poland was the first test of Germany's newest military strategy-the blitzkrieg, or "lightning war." It involved using fast-moving airplanes and tanks, followed by massive infantry forces, to take enemy defenders by surprise and quickly overwhelm them. In the case of Poland, the strategy worked. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor: The Japanese hoped to catch the Europeans and the United States by surprise. So they planned massive attacks on British and Dutch colonies in Southeast Asia and on American outposts in the Pacific-at the same time. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, Japan's greatest naval strategist, also called for an attack on the U.S. fleet in Hawaii. Early in the morning of December 7, 1941, American sailors at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii awoke to the roar of explosives. Within two hours, the Japanese had sunk or damaged 19 ships, including 8 battleships, moored in Pearl Harbor. More than 2,300 Americans were killed-with over 1,100 wounded. News of the attack stunned American people. The next day, President Roosevelt addressed Congress. December 7, 1941, he declared, was "a date which will live in infamy." About 8.5 million people died as a result of the war and another 21 million were wounded. world war 1 became a total war. This meant that countries devoted all their resources to the war effort. In Britain,Germany,Russia, and France, the entire force of government was dedicated to winning the war. In March 1918 the Germans mounted one final attack on the allies in France. on May 1918, the Germans was less than 40 miles away from Paris thinking that they will get victory. However the German military had weakened. making it easy for the Allies to attack with some 350 tanks smashing throw the Germans lines. with the arrival more than two million American troops, the allied forces were able to become successful in the war. 
woman's new rights: New ideas and ways of life led to to a new kind of individual freedom during the 1920's. woman's work in the war effort was decisive in helping them win the right to vote. After war woman's suffrage became law in many countries. They were allowed to wear shorter, looser garments and had hair bobbed or short. They also wore makeup, drove cars,and drink and smoke in public. 
World war ll: Americans at home made a crucial contribution to the allied war effort. Americans produced the weapons and equipment that would help win the war. The u.s made their product from machine guns to boots. the u.s had a lot of consumer goods from meat and sugar to tires and gasoline,from nylon stocking to laundry soap the American government rationed scare items.in the united states, youngsters saved pennies and bought government war stamps and bonds to help fiance the war. The allies began secretly building an invasion force in Great Britain. They wanted to launch an attack on German. The Germans knew the attack was coming but hey didn't know where from. World War 2: The United Nations is a organization that was founded in 1945 that's goal is to maintain international peace and security between the nations. After war, a example on how the U.S dealt  with specific criminals was the Nuremberg trials which lead people like Nazi Leaders receiving death sentences. Many of the criminals convicted would commit suicide before their execution. Even then the U.S aided the European countries by providing food, machinery and other materials to help the rebuild the war torn Europe. This act of aiding other countries by the U.S was named the Marshall plan. This was different from  the Versailles Treaty even though they helped them but they did not form some sort of peace(bond)
between the Nations they aided

The space between the trenches was known as "no man's land" because once you went there, there was no guarantee that you'd come back; the other side would fire at you.
