Chapter 1: The Stolen Letters

In chapter one, we meet Violet's father Arthur, her mother, her older brother and sister Chloe and Stephen. Violet finds out that her mother had hidden letters from her older sister after she voiced her opinion about whether girls should have the right to vote or not. Violet's parents think girls should not get to vote, but Chloe thinks otherwise. Violet while reading finds that Chloe now lives in New York and is training to become a nurse.

Chapter 2: The Dying Mrs Renwick

"Violet wished she had more comfortable clothes to run away in." The first sentence of chapter 2 instantly grabs my attention as we learn that Violet is sick of her parents. At dawn the next day, she crept out of the house to catch a train to New York City to find her sister Chloe. On the train, she meets a lady named Mrs Renwick who asks some (personal) questions. When Violet says, "I would like to be a reporter," (though she doesn't want to, for it was her friend Flossy who wanted to become a reporter before she died), to answer one of the questions Mrs Renwick asks about what she wants to be when she's older. Then she immediately says she thinks girls should not get jobs like that. When the train stops Violet is glad to get off.

Chapter 3: Meeting Myrtle

I think the theme of the passage is that when you are feeling sad, sometimes good things can happen. Like when Violet falls into the gutter, Myrtle comes and helps Violet or it could also be that you can find friends in unexpected places.

Chapter 4: Henry Street

Violet and Mrytle finally arrive at the Henry Street Settlement House and meet a man named Mr Martin. They ask him about Violet's sister Chloe. Only to find that she had gone to Washington to support the Anthony amendment.

Chapter 5: Hobie And The Brakeman

Violet and Myrtle meet Hoby, who helps them catch the train to Washington. They stop at Philadelphia for food later on the train. A man attacks them and dangles Myrtle off the train, and Violet and Hoby save her, and they continue on the train and make it to Washington. Violet and Myrtle say goodbye to Hoby because he wants to continue on the train.

Chapter 6: It all comes down to Tennessee

Violet and Myrtle arrive in Washington, and Myrtle says they have to go find the suffragettes, and they meet Professor Tll, who tells them to go to the house near Lafayette Square. They find the house and meet Miss Alice Paul and Miss Dexter, who tell her that her sister has been campaigning for months in Tennessee.

Chapter 7: Heading To Nashville

The following day Violet and Myrtle woke and went downstairs, where suffragettes made plans to go to Tennessee to fight for the Anthony amendment, and so Violet could find Chloe. But before they went, Mr Martin told Violet she must send a telegram to her parents telling them she was all right. Then on the train while a conductor was coming around and collecting tickets, he told Myrtle that she had to go to the colored car where all the colored people were.

Chapter 8: In The Jim Crown Car

when Myrtle arrives in the colored car an old woman invites myrtle to sit next to her to Myrtle to sit next to her and the old woman's name which was Mrs Merganser tells Myrtle about how she lost eight of her children and one husband to slave trade and then Myrtle asked her about whether she would vote or not and she says that the Anthony Amendment doesn't include colored woman orman for that matter and then offers Myrtle and apple which she gladly accepts

Chapter 9:

Violet goes to bring Myrtle some food, and they talk about how they think that Mr Martin is running from the police then men on the train ask them about Mr martin and Violet lies about going to the restrom to tell Mrs Martin about the men who are called palmer agents then he jumps off of the train right after he jumps the men come back and and intagaet Violet and Mrs Dexter.

Chapter 10: Red and Yellow Roses

In the morning violet has some oatmeal then then they talk about the war and Violet gets a chance to speak to Myrtle before she has to go to the next car to get on the train to Nashville and then violent meets a woman who has fallen on the tracks that is going to have a baby she tells Violet that her son had died in the war and they talk but then Violet has to go back to the suffragist car. To go to Nashville, and as they're leaving, Violet thinks she sees Mr Martin getting off the train and then she realizes it is Mr Martin. Then she sees a small black girl that she thinks is Myrtle. But before she can know for sure, the train picks up speed and she's off to Nashville.

Chapter 11: Finding Chloe

Violet goes to the hermitage, and there she realizes that the woman who got her from the train station is an anti. She is in this place called the hermitage, and she found herself in an anti meating eating sandwiches when she hears Chloe's voice on the balcony below and runs to meet her sister.

Mr Martin and Myrtle go from place to place as they are rejected becase Myrtle is colored they eventually they come to a run down Hotel and the manager gives them directions to dead horse alley which was a home to a woman named Mrs Eugenia Ready who offered rent to colored people and They arrive in dead horse alley and then they stay there. Meanwhile, Chloe likes Violet's idea of spying on the anti's, and they eventually they come up with a plan to meet at a bar so Violet can report back to Chloe, Violet goes back up to the Hermitage and she meets a woman named Miss Escuadrille and they talk about the meeting that the antithes are going to have and then comments on Violets dress and says that if she wants they have plenty of money and can buy her some and who can buy her a dress And Violet asked why we have so much money and then Miss Escuadrille says that The Men of the South know Woman should not get to vote and that they deserve to be the queen of the house and then Violet says how can she be a queen of the house if she's not even married and then Miss Escuadrille gets mad at Violet and it starts crying About how she's so old and still isn't married.

Chapter 14: Max Bloomstein's pharmacy

Myrtle is thinking about what's going to happen after the vote happens. Myrtle is trying to keep Mr Martin safe and of sight she is also telling him how he could mary Chloe. Myrtle is spurised to find that Mr Martin is in trouble for speaking out against the war she is surprised that he could spend 20 years in prison for just that.

Chapter 16
