Editing is used in the post production process of film making. It is used to add meaning to the film and allows them to cut out any mistakes or parts that will confuse the viewer. In film there is a beginning, middle and end. The beginning is where they introduce the story and characters. The middle is where it goes in further detail of the situation so the viewer knows whats happening and the end shows if the situation has gotten better or worse. This is used in linear narratives, if its a non linear this is where all the clips are mixed together.

In film editing there are different forms of editing that engage the viewer e.g slow pace makes the scene more dramatic and build tension, however the quicker the cuts the more excitement the viewer will feel.

In horror films there is normally slower cuts to make the scenario more dramatic and builds tension and suspense for example in the film. In the beginning of the film friday the 13th, jason awakes from the grave and kills two people, jason then begins to walk towards the kid and cuts slowly as he gets closer to the child to create more suspense about whats going to happen.

In action films there are normally cutaways which are used to interrupt continuous action and another type of editing is parallel editing/ cross cutting which the editor shows two things happening at the same time which can mislead the viewer to think something else. Cutaways are used in the film sparta when he is talking to the opposite person but cuts to the people around him to show what their emotion is and what their doing, but still lets the viewer hear what hes saying.

An example of a film with parallel editing is silence of the lambs, in the scene its hows outside the house where the police are getting ready to bust into the place, but it also cuts to the guy inside the house to show the viewer what hes doing while they are getting ready. But when they bust into the place they soon realise that they have the wrong house and someone else has gone alone the the place where the man is, this is because they was mislead by what they have seen.

In Camera editing is a technique where, instead of editing the shots in a film into sequence after shooting, the director decides to shoot the sequences all in one so its all complete when finished filming. The equipment needed for in camera editing is called a cinematographer which is an apparatus for showing motion- picture films.

Eisenstein is a russian film maker who invented the idea of a montage, a montage allows editors to put different clips in a sequence that dont have to go in order e.g shot 3 to shot 1. A montage allows it to compress time and conveys a lot of information in a relatively short period. An example of a film montage Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid which shows a trip from new york city to bolivia. This includes still pictures, sepia tone and slow paced editing.

DW Griffith is an early pioneer of the editing process. He created putting together different types of shots, angles and movements in order, which gives the film a sense of pace.

Shot variation is the technique used in film to create a sequence of images using movement, they normally use wide shots to set the scene and so the audience can grasp the concept of the scene. An example that has shot variation is the film The proposal as it shows close ups of both characters as they talk to enable the audience to see their true feelings .The benefits of shot variation is that it allows the scene to be more interesting and dynamic, and also it keeps the audiences attention on it.

An analogue is a plastic sheet that comes in various formats for still and video cameras. When it is exposed to light it creates an analogue for the actual scene. For example a splicer is needed which is a mechanical device for joining two pieces of paper or film or magnetic tape. The disadvantages of using analogue editing is that its much harder and time consuming, you cant chop up and edit pieces of audio in minutes and there is no undo button.

Digital editing involves moving film and audio into computer formats that can be modified on different softwares, this is so they can be trimmed cut and moved so they can create a flow. The benefits of digital editing is it has faster access and organisation, you have a preview window and visual effects. There are many different software you can do digital editing for example premiere PRO.

Seamless editing is also known as invisible editing. This means the cut between shots matches the action. This technique is still relevant in tv programmes and films we see today.

180 degree rule has an imaginary line which works as a guide for where camera can be placed. The camera should not cut from one side of this line to the other, breaking the rule confuses the viewer, making them stop and think. Might break away from the film as they try to readjust.
Cuts are used for different perspectives of the action, the quicker the cuts the more excitement however the slower cuts make it more dramatic and builds tension/suspense.

Dissolve transitions from one image to another, the term fade-out and fade-in are used to describe the transition to and from a blank image.

A wipe is where one shot replaces another by travelling from one side of the frame to another. An example of the "star wipe" can be seen in the guiding light opening sequences of the 1980s. An "INVISIBLE WIPE" is used to follow a person into another room by tracking parallel to the actor.

POV shot is a short film scene that shows what a character is looking at. POV shots are placed in between a shot of a character looking at something and a shot showing the characters reaction.

Shot reverse shot is where a character is shown looking at another character of screen and then that character has been edited to look back. Since the characters are shown facing in opposite directions, the viewer assumes that they are looking at each other.

Cutaways is the interruption of a continuously filmed action by inserting the view of something else. The most common use of cutaways in dramatic films is to adjust the pace of the main action or to allow the joining of parts of two versions of that shot.

Editing rhythm is what editors use to keep pace of the film up to match the action that is going on in the film. Slow cut edits has a calming bordering feel to the edit, where as fast cuts has lively, aggressive feel to the edit.
Cutting to the beat is a video editing technique where editors change shot on the beat of the song. It helps to create rhythm and pace in song. This is used in this beat because it goes 1 2 3 4 then cuts then repeats after
