How it spreads

Being highly contagious, the infection spreads through droplets released during sneeze and cough. You can infect yourself if you touch something a person with strep has coughed or sneezed upon and then touch your eyes, mouth, or nose with your hand. You can also get sick if you share a glass or other personal item with someone who has strep. Strep is most commonly spread between children at schools and daycare centers.

These medications inhibit the spread of bacteria and infections. Several types of antibiotics are available. However, penicillin and amoxicillin are the most common medications given for a strep infection.
It’s important that you finish your antibiotic treatment course to kill the infection completely.

Hand-washing is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of common infections, including strep throat. It’s especially helpful when you’re spending time in places where harmful germs are.
Running your hands under water for a few seconds isn’t enough to kill germs. Make it count! Wet your hands with clean water. Then lather up with soap. Scrub your hands, front and back, between your fingers, and under your fingernails, for at least 20 seconds. That’s about as long as it takes to sing the “happy birthday” song twice. Rinse your hands well. Then dry them with a clean towel or hand dryer.
