Mission:  Explore Moon Make-up

• Students will be divided into groups of 4 or 5. These groups will be projected onto the interactive whiteboard.
• Students will rotate clockwise to the 4 different stations labeled Black, Gray, Yellow and White. Each bin will have a different type of material for the students to observe and play with.
• Each group will have 1 piece of paper sectioned off in 4 squares. They will write characteristics they observed.
• Once students have rotated through all 4 stations I will ask questions such as:
  • What type of material characteristics did you find in each tub?
  • What were some different characteristics between the black and gray tub?
• Students will be asked which tub they feel would best describe the make-up they would find if they walked on the moon!

Mission:  Moon Characteristics

• Read "On the Moon" by Anna Milbourne.
• When students hear the following words read they are to make/say the following:
  • Moon - move their hands/arms above their head in a big circle shape.
  • See - move their hands up to their eyes to make goggles.
  • Five, four, three, two, one - say the words and show number using fingers.
  • Space - point to the sky
  • Down - point downward

"My Moon Book"

• Students will create a moon book and pages will be added throughout the unit.
• I will focus on pages 1-11.  The book will be projected over the interactive whiteboard.  As we read the pages together, students will be asked to underling any key ideas they find important.  
• Once completed make several statements.  Students will then give me a thumbs up if the statement is true or a thumbs down if the statement is false:
  • Orbit means to go around something.
  • It takes the moon nearly 30 days to orbit the Earth.
  • The moon rises in the east.

  • Students will have the sheet below and complete the sentence "If I lived on the moon, it might feel like..."

Students will create a moon using 2 paper plate bowls, colored pencils, paint, paint brushes and string.  There will be a bin created with supplies for each table.

When students are finished, I will have them individually tell me about their moon.  They will be asked to describe their moon make-up.  I will be looking for overall knowledge learned using key moon language, characteristics and creativity.

After they meet with me, we will hang their moons from the ceiling to add a visual arts piece to the classroom for the unit.

Moon Math Flash Cards

• Students can work on their math facts up to 20. Students will have a flash card with say 4+5= ?  The students will have to show their answer by placing the correct number of craters on a photo of the moon.

Rainbow Moon Vocabulary

• Students will obtain a worksheet with key moon vocabulary on it.  They will be asked to trace the word multiple times in a pattern using different colors.

I will ask the students to go out and observe the moon with a parent or guardian once a night for 27 days. I want the students to do most of their observations around the same time of the night so the data they collect is similar. They will be asked to draw a picture of the Earth and Sun and the Moon's relative position (moon phase) to the Earth each night.

Before the students begin their observations I would like to show them a visual representation of the Earth orbiting the Sun and the Moon orbiting the Earth.

We will discuss as a class each day what the students observed the night before by drawing it on the board or using interactive whiteboard to share everybody's drawings.
