In a way the Capulets and Montagues serve as stand-ins for these two groups, as the two  families feud due to their ancestors starting friction between the two, a cause so nonsensical that both families do not even know what their ancestors fought for, just as how protestants and Catholics had fought due to their parents fighting, creating a vicious cycle of violence and turmoil, context very much in need to explain why the two families' feud got so violent and uncontrollable. If this is how we view the story, then Romeo and Juliet serve as the representation of peace between groups of protestants and catholics, as they both found common ground and form a bond, and so their deaths act as a sort of wake up call to the two families that they had fought for nothing, making the deaths of the two as a unnecessary tragedy, brought about by a conflict neither wanted to fight in. If viewed through the moralist approach it would just be seen as the senseless suicide of two young lovers brought about by a regular feud family, instead of an allegory for unwarranted killings and violence during an era of change. Using the historical approach was necessary to properly view how the Capulets and Montagues were not just mere feuding families but English Protestants and Catholics fighting each other, as without historical context one would just see the feud as nothing more than a regular feud between rivaling families and not as an allegory for mindless violence during Shakespeare's time. One cannot use other methods such as the moralist approach as the era in which the play was written was one of different ideals and values, compared to today's world it was a very hectic period for the poor and an extremely violent affair for families vying for control, this sort of rivalry is hardly present in a modern society where due to stability and order, morals are a set standard and are not so heavily Christian in nature.
