In Frederick Douglass' speech named "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?", he explains how this holiday should not be honored as something memorable. He also says how America has not treated their people right, such as slaves, and what this holiday truly means to the people. There is honor and independence on the Fourth of July, but why? Frederick Douglass wonders why America has not lived up to its expectations and has shown the people their bad actions. Overall, he talks about there not being equality among the people. People need to be able to speak up about the unfair struggles going on, such as white supremacy.

The Fourth of July only meant the freedom for white Americans, specifically white men. This didn't include African Americans because they were never free on this day. They say the Fourth of July is the celebration for all American freedom, but it is not. America still had slaves, women were owned, and in general non white people were treated as foreigners. As those people celebrate this holiday, the African Americans have to mourn. They have to live in fear.

In Douglass' speech, his main discussion points involved the fact that the Fourth of July was a day to celebrate America's freedom and rights that were given to them from Britain, who they had been under control of, until now. He points out that the Fourth of July is not a holiday that everyone can celebrate. It's a holiday for the free, white American citizens. The black community does not claim this holiday, because they know they are still not free and they do not have the same rights as everyone else living in the country at this time.

Douglass' speech was about how hypocritical the Fourth of July was, and how hard it was for enslaved people. Americans talked about how kind and fair their country was, and they celebrated there freedom while the slaves watched while being treated very unfairly and with no freedom. The country took in refugees, while a seventh of he population was in need of saving but no one helped them. One symbol that represents Douglass' speech is the Constitution. The Constitution is all about how equal America is, so this is the symbol because it is very hypocritical.
