The adults he encounters are "phonies" to him, and are not true to themselves. Holden views sex as a transition from childhood to adulthood. Throughout the novel Holden is in several situations to lose his virginity, but he never does because he is not ready to lose his innocence.

J.D.Salinger wrote "Catcher in the Rye" purposely, with the symbols of sex and women placed carefully and described vividly for multiple reasons. Holden's obsession with sex and woman came from a paradoxical desire for wanting to grow up and do adult things (such as have sex) and remain innocence and childlike. Throughout the novel, Holden is desperately trying to hold onto his childhood, but he does so many things that aren't kid appropriate: drinking, smoking, and getting a prostitute, but Holden cannot seem to lose his last bit of innocence, no matter how much he wants it. He has many chances to lose his virginity, but Salinger gives into Holden's desire to stay a child by giving him his innocence. Salinger gives the book the symbols of sex and women to further Holden's narrative of not wanting to grow up by making him face the decision between lust or his childhood.

Theme: Sex and women is a very important theme to the novel. Sex is holding Holden back from crossing to adulthood, and he continuously creates excuses to not have sex so he can stay in his innocent childhood timezone.
Characters: Holden is very affected by sex. He calls himself a "sex maniac" despite being a virgin. He is very interested in the concept of sex but is too nervous to actually have sex.
Tone: Holden is rather pessimistic and angry toward many people, calling them phonies. Most women in the book, disregarding Sunny and Sally, are not phonies to him. His mother, the nuns, and especially Jane are not phonies.
