Throughout the novel, Holden is desperately trying to hold onto his childhood, but he does so many things that aren't kid appropriate: drinking, smoking, and getting a prostitute, but Holden cannot seem to lose his last bit of innocence, no matter how much he wants it. He has many chances to lose his virginity, but Salinger gives into Holden's desire to stay a child by giving him his innocence. Tone: Holden is rather pessimistic and angry toward many people, calling them phonies. Most women in the book, disregarding Sunny and Sally, are not phonies to him.
