Report on Mary Wollstonecraft - Ashley Caharian

Overall, I enjoyed researching and presenting my report as I felt a personal connection to my topic. This served as motivation for me to do my very best as I felt that I owed it to my personal advocacy to provide an accurate and passionate representation. Researching on my topic allowed me to further be educated, or enlightened, regarding the root of my beliefs. The main challenge I encountered would probably be my fear of not doing enough. I placed pressure onto myself, possibly an extensive and unnecessary amount of pressure at that, because like I said; I didn't want to disappoint or do wrong by my advocacy and those who believe in it. I overcame this difficulty by continuously doing my best so that I left myself with no 'what ifs'. Though it required a lot of energy and time, I put my very best into this presentation. In the future, I can improve my presentations by always attempting to find a personal connection to the topic, as I felt that was what really allowed me to do well in this particular report. I find that being emotionally/mentally invested in a topic, rather than simply studying it for the sake of studying it, really allows you to thoroughly understand and apply the knowledge that you have gathered. My main takeaway from my classmates' presentations (along with my own) would be that History, particularly the Age of Enlightenment, holds a lot of responsibility when it comes to directing the present and future.

The challenges that I encountered were to look for reliable sources, this is because I researched a lot about his work and then there were no that much information about him in some reliable websites such as Nat Geo and History. I found in another website about his contribution in the enlightenment era but I wasn't sure about it being true. I overcame these challenges by relating the work with other facts such as the causes of historical events such as the French Revolution. In the next presentation, I can be sure next time in my information that I am going to share in class, be more prepared, and find reliable sources in the internet. My main takeaways from all the presentations I saw were that the changes that people wanted back then were about rights of the citizens and their government, and changing the governments ways in managing its citizens by controlling their thoughts about the world.

Rene Descartes - Juliana Lacida

When preparing, researching and presenting my report on Rene Descartes, I quite enjoyed reading and understanding his ideas as well as his contributions to the modern society. The ideas he had promoted and proposed were quite interesting to me however, it did take quite a bit of research to fully understand all his ideas, which I could say was a challenge I encountered. Therefore, to overcome this, I made sure to put a lot of time, effort and practice into my research and presentation. Something I could do better, next time I present, is to practice speaking more clearly, as I noticed I stuttered and mispronounced many words quite often. This then further means that I will be practicing my presentations skills. Overall though, my biggest takeaway from my presentation and my classmates was that each and every person presented made a huge contribution to society then and now. They all changed society or the world one way or another therefore, the world would not be the same without their views and beliefs. They then tell us and show us that we should too speak up on what we believe is right and what we believe is wrong. That is my biggest takeaway from the overall presentations.

Cesare Beccaria - Keirsten Francisco

I found this activity very enriching and enlightening, and I was able to gain a lot of knowledge from my research topic. I was very interested by Beccaria's influence on modern criminology, which was why I found my topic so fascinating. It provided me with an insight on justice and law and how the definition and application of these concepts into society have changed over time. I found that my biggest challenge was being unsure of how much information I could effectively present in a 10 minute period, and how I could share this knowledge with my classmates to the best of my ability. I was quite overwhelmed when doing this presentation and I didn't know if I was doing too little or too much. I ended up overcoming this mental challenge by trusting that I was doing my very best while making this presentation, and keeping the information overload to a minimum to not overwhelm my classmates. In the future, I could definitely do better in the presenting aspect by making sure that my points are solid and that I have a mental 'script' of my information to refrain from stuttering and going on tangents, lessening the possibility of confusion from my peers. This activity effectively showed me that society continues to change for the better over time thanks to these leading figures that had the courage and initiative to fight for this change. It inspires me to advocate for what I believe is right and to not be afraid of judgement.

I found the task fun and interesting as it help me learned the enlightenment days in the past and the great thinkers of those days. I enjoyed researching on Adam Smith and I was able to gain a lot of information after only finding two websites. I enjoyed his ideas and his ideas that help contribute to society and how his ideas helped shape our society. One of the challenges I encountered however was that it took a lot of time for me to gather the information I needed and time was running short. I was able to make more time for more research and time on my presentation so I would not only be done with my presentation but be satisfied with it as well. I believe that I could add more history design to my presentation and add more pictures and references as supporting evidence. From all the presentations, I learned the enlightened thinkers from the enlightenment days devoted those days into shaping our society today and that we should try to contribute our role into society.

I found this task very enjoyable to accomplish because what I found interesting during the research process is how the contribution of my assigned enlightenment thinker to society can be in relation to the modern world and how has it been modified overtime. I also enjoyed listening to the presentations of others because I was able to have a more in depth understanding of other forms/brances of science such as economy or criminology. One challenge I encountered while doing this task is to find ways to be able to explain the ideas of my assigned enlightenment thinker effectively. My solution to overcome this problem is to only include the important aspects of ideas by using summarization and their relation to the modern society. I can improve my process of creating presentations as a method of sharing information by using different formats of slides or diagrams as a way to present infrmation. This will allow the attention of the audience to be caught into listening to the presentation which can result into a clear or more in depth understanding of the topic on hand.

I think some of the challenges I encountered while working on my report were; I had a hard time sorting out the information I gathered from my research. So I think, to improve I can be more organized while researching and answering the questions accordingly. Another challenge I faced was minimizing the amount of information put into the report. Overall, I really enjoyed the task because it was another way of getting to know more history and more of the leading figure you were assigned to. Some of the takeaways from the other presentations I saw were that, all of the information presented were always somehow connected, without one of the leading figures the other's would not have been possible.
