3 Ways to Apply to Future Teaching

1.) I can apply these learnings to future teaching by being open minded and having a stern mind of how I can support certain answers and questions about slavery or any type of inequality questions.
2.) I can also apply by moving beyond textbooks by becoming more productive with my students and encouraging them to know about these topics and how it was very controversial back then.
3.) I would apply by considering taking students to museums to get a glimpse of how slavery has immensely changed over the decades and how we can find ways we can support.

I have always wondered why these types of situations happen in today society's such as violence and inequality. It seems like there is something in the news that covers slavery or any type of racism.
I question how can it become better for students that are in diverse or non diverse environments.

I have noticed some connections made that very much intrigued me because slavery connects to Martin Luther King Jr. and Equity. the importance is that MLK practically changed the way African American people live. It connects because of the unequal treatment that Black Americans received. Equity also connects because it identifies the significance of equity and how all people should be treated equally, fairly, and just.

Move Beyond Textbooks: Many textbooks in today's society are not useful because they can lead to inadequate and inaccurate information. It is better to explore and have different views of slavery because it enhances the way students think. It is better to look into firsthand accounts such as people who actually lived through it and books that are more powerful such as their voices and experiences of slavery.

Get out of the Classroom: Learning about slavery is important and it is especially important for students because they need to know the history. there are many ways to learn outside of the classroom. Taking class trips to museums and historic sites is a great way to learn more about slavery. Museums that have plantations, cemeteries, auction blocks and historical markers. They include the Washington D.C.--the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and etc.

Identify the Slaveholding Presidents: many the presidents including the founding fathers were slaveholders. About 12 U.S. Presidents held approximately one to hundreds of people as slaves. Specifically Thomas Jefferson and George Washington. Both held 300 to 600 enslaved people. Of course, slavery should be taught from different perspectives such as the people who were enslaved back then.

Shortage of Ideas: There is a shortage of ideas of how educators can better themselves by teaching slavery in a calmer way. It can even be parents or anyone who is interested in this topic that specifically relates to slavery. Ideas and opinions go along way and it's important for people to know more about slavery and how it has affected many people over the decades.

Scenario Examples of Slavery in the Classroom: many teachers in past years have demonstrated what slavery looked liked and many people were very startled by this because it was not right. Some examples included a teacher who resigned because an investigation found that the teacher ad three others had given math homework with word problems that contained slavery. Another example, a teacher shocked her class by having black students lie down and the she stepped on their backs to show what slavery actually looked like in her classroom.
