This song appears to have Michael Buble as the speaker. However, in looking at his background information, it does not appear that their is a specific occasion for this song. He has been married to Luisana Lupilato since 2011, and they have two sons ("Michael Buble").

His audience is definitely a girlfriend that, according to the video, he has been living with. His purpose for creating the song is to tell her that it's actually a great thing that their relationship is done with and that he is enjoying it way more than their relationship together. This then becomes the subject: a break-up can make life better.

Buble as the now free man uses logos, pathos, and ethos throughout the lyrics and video of "It's a Beautiful Day" to tell his ex-girlfriend that life is actually better in many ways now that they have broken up. Buble's use of these appeals through metaphors, imagery, symbols, and logic make him effective in getting his message across to her.

Since this song isn't a story so much as it is observations, it is easier to look at the lyrics in connection to the three basic appeals.

The first 3 lines state "I don’t know why/You think that you could hold me/ When you can’t get by by yourself." This uses ethos to show what kind of person his girl is. She is needy but also acts like she has control over him. The next lines "And I don’t know who/Would ever want to tear the seam of someone’s dream" add to the idea that she is a fairly mean person as ripping apart someone's dream is pretty cruel. His final nod to her character happens at the end of the song when he states, "Oh, baby, any day that you’re gone away/ It’s a beautiful day." This reminds the listeners as well as her that he sees her presence as something not pretty as things are beautiful when she is not there.

After looking at her character, he does look at himself and considers his credibility for his opinionated statements. In lines 6-9 he states, "Baby, it’s fine, you said that we should just be friends/ While I came up with that line and I’m sure/ That it’s for the best/ If you ever change your mind, don’t hold your breath." This indicates that he has been the "dumper" of the relationships in the past, so he knows what is meant by the line of being friends and how it usually turns out when it is used to end a relationship.

In looking at how Buble uses emotions in his lyrics, we can first see his word choices playing into emotions. In the lines "Cause you may not believe/ That baby, I’m relieved/ When you said goodbye, my whole world shines" the word "relieved" gives us a relaxed feeling and the metaphor of "whole world shines" gives a comparison of how his relief turns to brightness. Again in the 2nd verse, he uses the word "fly" to identify his new situation with carefree, weightless feelings while he refers to "caged" as the relationship. This connection of fly and cage is a metaphor created to suggest the feelings that have changed with their break up. The final example of Buble's use of pathos in the lyrics says, "This fire inside, it burns too bright." This again is a metaphor to compare his passion is too strong to be held hostage by her. It could also indicate fire as rage meaning he is done with trying to keep the relationship together.

While often times singers focus more on pathos, those emotions that hold for us meaning with the tune, or ethos, those values we hold and the people we are, some singers use logos to state facts, the obvious observations that can be verified. Buble does use facts to get his message across that he is glad the relationship is over. The first example is when he indicates that because of the break-up, she will see "If I’m drinking, then I’m buying." This is just a fact we can verify by observing that he will buy drinks for others while he is celebrating about the break-up. In addition, his vocabulary is used along with the stated fact "And I know there’s no denying/ It’s a beautiful day, the sun is up, the music’s playing/ And even if it started raining/ You won’t hear this boy complaining." The use of "denying" allows her to see that he is indeed using facts that will happen now that they are through. The observations of the sun being up and music playing can easily be heard through his upbeat tune. He also solidifies his mood by indicating another atmosphere of rain and how that will not get him out of his good mood either. In his final part of the song, he states, "Cause if you ever think I’ll take up/ My time with thinking of our break-up/ Then, you’ve got another thing coming your way" to one more time prove that their relationship will not be on his mind from here on out.

The lyrics use several appeals throughout to make his message clear to his girlfriend that he will be better off without her. The video used along with these lyrics connect and solidify what some of the lyrics mean in regards to how things will be better. Overall, Buble IS effective in both the lyrics and video in convincing his audience (his now ex) that everything will be better now that they are no longer in a relationship.
