The characters Ralph and Piggy are introduced. They find a conch shell and Ralph blows into it like a horn. This noise helps gather the rest of the boys who are on the island. As they gather we are introduced to other main characters like Samneric, Jack,  Johnny, Simon, and the choir.  Ralph is established as a leader of the group and takes order by starting the task of gathering wood and sticks for a fire. Jack and Ralph also disagree on whether hunting or shelter is more important. Ralph is acting more mature and he is planning what he will say at the meeting. Ralph calls the meeting and brings up some topics like keeping the fire lit, going to the bathroom where the tide comes in, and the beasts. Ralph wants everyone to start pulling their weight in the group. The meeting breaks up when the discussion of the beast  begins. Jack says that the Littluns need to stop being babies.  The chapter ends when Jack says he is going  to kill the beast. He runs away and some run after him, only Ralph, Simon,  and Piggy stay. With everyone gone, Ralph says if he blows the conch now and no one comes back, the conch will have lost its power completely. Samneric claim they see the beast when it is just the dead parachutist. Ralph and the boys go out to look for the beast. Roger and Maurice do this for the sole  reason that they can, there are no adults or people to tell them they can't. Kicking over the sandcastles also makes them feel superior the the Littluns.  Jack and the choir go out  on their mission to hunt with their masks and face paint. As jack and the choir are gone, a ship is spotted in the distance. As the ship passes the fire,  that was meant to send a smoke signal for ships to see them, was out. Ralph is super frustrated with the group and how the let the fire out.
