When reading these chapter the real standout pilot point is Keith's death and the implied mental state of of Lauren. I absolutely love Octavia Butler's writing style and how she builds to this particular moment on page 112. What's so impactful by this is the the build up how that leads to the implied mental state of Lauren. This is accomplished throw many means the first of witch is making this book Laurens journal with date. The dates help show that Lauren only writes one sentence in the span of 3 day. While Lauren is far from writing every day, she does write as an outlet to major issue in her life where she often reflecting and writing ways to improve and provide wisdom for the future. However on this day she is so overwhelmed she cant even express more than a sentence nor can she find any wisdom or guidance from this situation. I think its also important to reflect on the fact that Lauren has hyper empathy and is not only feeling her own grief and sorrow but the collective grief of her family and community. I view this inability to write as a breaking point for Lauren where she is unable to feel anything but sorrow. Part of the reason I love how this part was written is because it glimpses into a world of mental illness that many people struggle with wail also showing a larger societal issue regarding mental illness in society where mental illness is still a taboo issue that many struggle to speak out against like Laurens inability to talk about her own emotions. I personally find this section one of the most impactful throw-out the book however its so easy to over look.
