Many restorative practices are not that different than what was already happening at the elementary level. The idea that relationships matter. That behavior is communication, so we always reflect on why a behavior is happening. That when kids struggle the assumption is that they may need support with a certain skill, not that there is a lack of will. Everything is based on teaching and creating a space for learning.

Since Restorative Justice is more about the climate and culture of a school community, how do we then have a "common language", if it can look slightly different at each school? Additionally, how do we staff equitably to support these practices? Every school has unique needs.

We need more staff to support students with tier II and tier III behaviors. More structured social skills, small group circles. We don't have enough staff to meet with all the kids who need this amount of support. Classroom teachers can do whole-group circles, but there are many kids who need more regularly-scheduled, proactive supports in a small group.

What school structures can we re-design and re-think to support restorative practices? Can we create smaller communities of students within a secondary environment via scheduling and course planning? Are there already cohorts within the secondary level so students and teachers can work more closely with one another more regularly, and for longer, so that it is easier to reap the benefits of a close-knit community. Consistent contact leads to familiarity which leads to understanding.
