The drought in 1977 caused the number of portulaca plants to decrease because they didn't have enough water. The tribulus plants survived because they didn't need as much water as the portulaca plants. This caused the birds with smaller beaks to die due to the fact that they can't eat the hard tribulus seeds. The birds with longer beaks survived since they can eat the tribulus seeds.

For 551 days the islands received no rain. Grants returned to Daphne Major to document the effect of the drought on the next generation of medium ground finches. They measured the offspring and compared their beak size to that of the previous generations. They found the offsprings' beaks to be 3 to 4% larger than the previous generation.

243 large beak Medium Ground Finches were alive and sense the birds reproduced their would be more and more generations with the large beak trait. Although only 90 small/thin beak Medium Ground Finches lived would not have that specific trait carried on to next generations. Now that the future generation have the large beak trait to these Medium Ground Finches, which in other words is, Natural Selection.
