Quote Analysis - Nonfiction

"The first surgery Zan and I had involved removing the top part of our skulls, reshaping the bone, and reattaching our craniums with plates and screws. Then our eyes were repositioned and remodeled... these operations were known as Le Fort procedures..." (page 33) Through this quote we are able to see how the first of their many procedures was done. Ariel goes into detail stating what happened, the name, and later in the chapter, what the recovery process would be like. There is information given that can be researched further and shows that this quote is solid evidence that this memoir is nonfiction.

Quote Analysis - Creative

"Zan continued calling herself ugly. Because if she identified and verbalized her own perceived flaws first, maybe others wouldn't feel the need to do it, too." (page 51) When this quote was written, the girls were in elementary school. Both of them had trauma from their surgeries and heard bullying for their looks that they built up walls to save themselves from the pain. This is a response in a creative matter where instead of hiding their flaws, they would make them seen in hopes to make them seem normal. Showing creativity in the first section of the memoir.
