The setting on the book “Holes” took place at Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake is a “camp” where people get sent to for breaking the law. Even though it’s called Camp Green Lake, there is no water because of a drought. At Camp Green Lake, convicts are asked to dig a hole 5 feet deep and 5 feet wide, the length of the shovel. People think that if you tell a bad boy to dig a hole, it will turn him into a good boy.

I would give the book 5 stars. One pro is the plot, the plot flows well and the transitions are smooth from one scene to another. Another pro is that the amount of detail in the book for the reader to visualize every single detail about the book. A con is that it is not very appropriate for every age because there is shooting and guns involved. A second con is that the book teaches the reader good lessons with bad examples.

Favorite Part

One of my favorite part in the book was when Stanley was teaching Zero how to read and write. This shows that Stanley cares about someone he’s met for about 1 week. I like this part because Stanley is helping Zero who doesn’t even know how to say every single letter in the alphabet instead of making fun of him like the counselors at Camp Green Lake. This also shows caring and kindness. It was also challenging for Zero, which is a good thing because if everything in the world was to easy, then why would we need to go to school? In this case, Zero is the student and Stanley is the teacher.
