This is a funded opportunity for BIPOC youth (17-29) across the country to not only learn more about transportation equity issues but to also positively impact their own communities. I know this is not directly related to the general philosophy department but thought you might know of BIPOC students who would benefit from the opportunity, so please feel free to share around or reach out to me if you have any questions. Applications close October 30th, 2023.

This fellowship is both a chance for those with an interest in getting involved in transportation equity and a program to aid those already involved.

Today we had a great meeting. We had a good turnout of kids, and we had a very good and insightful conversation. First, we got all the kids to introduce themselves and we also introduced ourselves and went over the two most important rules of the club which are to use your own brain and you can only speak when you are holding a puppet. Then we went into doing an ice breaker to get the kids brains following and get them just comfortable speaking up. We had flashcards with certain scenarios, and we let them share their thoughts and see if they agreed or disagreed with the statement. Some examples are, “school lunches should only serve broccoli, iPhones are better than tablets, schools should not give homework, children should only eat vegetables at dinner.” The kids really enjoyed this exercise and gave some very insightful input on these topics. One of the most interesting things was seeing all the kids actually advocate for teachers giving out homework and how they felt that homework truly helps them learn better and they feel like without the use of homework they will not learn as much. They also brought up kids who are nervous to speak in class and might be too nervous to ask a question. Homework gives them an opportunity to work through the questions they might have about a topic. Then we read them a story about how things are not always as they seem, and we gave a visual with that by putting a paint brush in a glass of water. It demonstrated that even though looking through the glass it looked like the paintbrush was slated if you took it out the water it was completely normal. Overall, it was a great first meeting and the kids were super engaged.

Today we had a wonderful meeting. We had double the number of kids we had last meeting which was awesome. We also had a good turnout of parents present at the club as well. First, we all introduced ourselves and then went over the two main rules in the club which are: to use your own brain and to only talk if you're holding the puppet. These rules are important because they help us establish that we want everyone to be creative and produce their own ideas and answers. Also, the poppet method helps ensure we can hear who is talking and helps get the class to listen and focus on the one person talking. Today's lesson plan we talked about things that were similar but also different at the same time. We made flash cards with two different items on there and asked the kids If they could provide a similarity or a difference between the two. For example, "hamburger and hotdog or your left and right shoe.” The kids loved responding to these kinds of questions and got everyone thinking and talking. Then, we read a story about similarities and differences and in the story, it compared a bunch of animals and items to each other and being to find them to be the same/different even though they could be named two different things or look different. We had great participation during this meeting, and the kids had a wonderful time.

Today we had another amazing meeting. We had a great turnout of kids, and we also had some parents come as well. We focused on an expansion of the lesson from last time with similarities and differences. We had deeper and more examples for the kids to compare and contrast. For example, we asked them to compare differences and similarities between their best friend and their best friend. Or what makes you different or similar to the person next to you. Or what is the difference between a baby and a baby doll? This was a great way to start the conversation and get the kids' brains flowing. Then Professor Cammarano read a story that she made about a boy named Kobe who wakes up one day and is a cat. We asked the class to compare and contrast what their lives would be different or similar if they woke up as cats. Also, what would be the first thing they would do if they woke up in the situation? The kids got very in depth in this discussion, and everyone participated and was eager to speak. Overall, another amazing young thinkers club in the books.

PACE 205: "What is a just prison? Corrections and Incarceration from two points of view"

This introductory review unveils a myriad of questions, answers, and reflections concerning America’s current prison system and the ethical dimensions tied to incarceration on the Eastern Shore. During an enlightening evening lecture, Dr. Stock posed a crucial inquiry: “What is a just prison, and what relevance does it hold for the U.S.?”

The challenging questions addressed by both Dr. Brown (Criminal Justice, UMES) and Dr. Stock (Philosophy, SU) encompassed deterrence of crime, just punishment, rehabilitation and repair, and systemic inclusion or exclusion from essential aspects of society. Despite approaching the situation from distinct perspectives, these scholars collaborated seamlessly.

Dr. Stock laid the groundwork, providing essential information for informed opinions, while Dr. Brown commanded attention, prompting the audience to examine their biases. In an eye-opening exercise, perceptions of prisoners were dissected, revealing negative connotations that reflect societal “social ills” and gains.

Historically, prisons, originating from the institution of slavery, mirror societal shifts. The system, criticized for preying on impoverished communities and individuals, raises questions about society’s alleged addiction to imprisonment.

The ethical dilemma arises: How do we equip individuals for re-entry, prevent reoffending, raise awareness, humanize, and foster success?

Dr. Brown advocated for sustained interventions, accountability, and a reconsideration of constitutional rights for prisoners. This introspection, he argued, is crucial to shifting society’s narrative.

The upcoming meeting on November 20th, 2023, will delve into Institutional Realities, featuring an expert panel discussing the vision of prisons as just institutions.

Join the conversation to deepen your understanding of institutional priorities, the mission, and the role of education in shaping a fair and just prison system for the future.

2023 Ethics Bowl

I had the privilege of attending an Ethics Bowl competition on December 6, 2023, an experience separatefrom the typical debate team setting. For those unaware, Ethics Bowl is a competition that involves collaborative analysis of ethical dilemmas, encouraging an atmosphere that resembles a respectful ethical discussion rather than a traditional contest.

University teams, such as Salisbury University's Maroon and Gold teams, engage in weeks of preparation, studying potential legal cases before randomly selected cases are posed during the match.

To win, teams must craft clear and well-rounded arguments, judged across the basis of four criteria: presentation, commentary on the opposing team's presentation, response to the commentary of the other team, and handling judge's questions. The judging process maintains anonymity, referring to judges as "Judge 1, 2, and 3" rather than by name. Scores range from 1 to 10, with 10 signifying exceptional performance and 1 indicating almost or complete absence in the match.

The team with the highest points at the end is given a victory and progresses on in the competition.

Salisbury University's Gold team, comprising of Tiana Sophie Detorie, Emily King, Liam McGinnes, Wyatt Parks, and Sara Sellers, demonstrated prowess with a 3-0 win in their first match against Westchester University in Baltimore, Maryland. Despite subsequent victories against US Naval Academy and Virginia Tech University, the Gold team faced elimination in the quarterfinals against Tuff University, ending with a 1-2 loss.

Simultaneously, the Maroon team, featuring Tiana Cyrelson, Kate Gerlus, Ashley Piper, Miranda Surrett, and Alexis Yeager, showcased strong skill in their virtual matches. Achieving a 3-0 win against the University of Pittsburgh and engaging closely with Adams State (1-2) and Washington and Lee (1-2), the Maroon team exhibited unrivaled resilience, sportsmanship, and kindness. During a break, the team even took a moment to converse with members of an opposing team.

Clearly, Ethics Bowl provides a platform for students to develop values, reflect on societal issues, and prepare to become ethical leaders. Ethics Bowl continues to prove to be a great program to invest in. Despite victories and losses, both Salisbury teams embraced the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to ethical discussions and proved to be hard-working and headstrong competitors.
