Power Theme (Act 1)

Many people search for power and gain it through knowledge. Everyone spends their lives searching for power, but truly, knowledge is more powerful. This is shown when Prospero enslaves Ariel using his knowledge, constantly reminding Ariel that "when [he] arrived and heard [Ariel], that made gape / The pine and let [Ariel] out" (Shakespeare 1.2.346-347). Despite Ariel having literal power, Prospero has the upper hand because of his knowledge and manipulation tactics.

Perspective Theme (Act 1)

A person's perspective is based on the knowledge that they hold and the things that they have experienced. Perspective defines how people view the things and people around them. For example, when Ferdinand first arrives on the island, Miranda sees him and says, "A thing divine, for nothing natural / I ever saw so noble" (Shakespeare 1.2.499-500). This shows that Miranda's perspective of Ferdinand is thrown off because she has never seen another person other than her father and magical creatures and she hasn't experienced enough to fully perceive Ferdinand for who he is.

Act 2: Perspective

Gaining a new perspective can make people change their behavior and allow them to think differently. For example, when the king's brother, Sebastion, learns that he can kill his brother and become king, it is all that he wants to do. This is proven when Antonio says, "'Say this were death / That now hath seized them" (Shakespeare 2.1.298-299), and then Sebastion responds, "Draw thy sword. One stroke... / And I the King" (Shakespeare 2.2.334,356). This shows that new perspectives can open people's eyes and make them act and think in different ways.

Act 3: Knowledge

Knowledge is the most powerful form of power and can help a person gain or lose power. This is shown when Caliban is plotting to kill Prospero and suggests that they "burn... his books / [his] brave utensils" (Shakespeare 3.2.104-105). This means that knowledge is a very strong form of power because Prospero, a man with literal magic, relies on his books/knowledge and could possibly defeated if his knowledge was taken away.
