Because the fossil fuels are made from substances which used to be alive, they naturally contain a lot of carbon dioxide. The oil and gas would not have caused any issues or climatic problems if it was left alone in the subsea. But humans relatively recently discovered that we can suck it up and use it as fuel. The problem is that when we burn these fuels, we release the greenhouse gasses that they contain into the atmosphere.
