Personally, I have always felt self-conscious about my vocabulary development. As a high school student, I hated having weekly vocabulary words to memorize. I never truly LEARNED the meanings. I just memorized them until Friday. I’m sure many students will agree with this process! I feel that effective vocabulary and linguistics instruction can give students a SKILL in life that they can use daily.

In a recent meeting in August of 2018, literacy expert Tim Shaunahan discussed the importance of morphology awareness. He talked about how “phonics instruction cannot explain the grapheme-phoneme correspondences in countless words like does and rough.”

He also discusses how structured word inquiry (SWI) is not about “adding morphological instruction to phonics instruction - IT’S ABOUT TEACHING HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS!”

Shaunahan proposed teaching students about bases (root words) and affixes (morphemes) ALONGSIDE with phonics to help students understand morphemes are the “building blocks that construct words.”

For ELEMENTARY STUDENTS:

Start with free bases (morphemes that stand alone) & THEN add in the bound bases (units that cannot stand alone)

Start with familiar vocabulary words for students & analyze these to find the bases to finally find other words in the same family
