In the 1930s, fears of a new world war brought several thousand more Russians to the U.S. "Fear of persecution led many Russians to convert to Protestantism, to change their names, and to deny their heritage to any outsiders."

He is scared because the guards  are  trying to find him.  And was also worried to get caught If Nathan gets caught  he would get killed by the guards. In the story  it uses sentences such as " They'll bring me back and kill me in front of his regiment as a warning to others." In the story it also says "If they find out those who help me then they would also die.

Rifka is fearful because she had to be left behind and stay in Poland while her family went to America due to her ringworm. Rifka is also brave because she stayed with a family she didnt know who helped immigrants until the ringworm is healed.
