Alternate work for folks who have not taught before?

Perhaps I'm the only one in this boat, but I found the pre-work for Core Session 2 really frustrating as it was wholly geared toward fixing a current course. I have not taught before and am gearing up to do so in Spring, and really hoped that there would be more ability to focus on how to structure courses from the ground up with UDL in mind rather than just applying lessons to prior experience.

Empathy Mapping

Still a bit confused about this practice and the exercise that was given - the example was very specific to an individual, but it seems that we are to apply this technique from more generalities/common knowledge/grapevine rumblings? Feels like there is a disconnect between the ideal version of an empathy map and what we can do with the limited resources we have. Would love more clarity on how folks have actively utilized this technique.

Based on my experience, I think it would be helpful to have some clear qualifiers for the recommended sessions i.e. this session is intended for people that...it seems like a lot of people who haven't taught yet & are preparing to teach for the first time struggle with the content

Overall, I think it would be great to have sessions dedicated to people who haven't taught before and are getting ready to teach/design their first class.

I think it might be helpful to have an intro session (after being introduced to the main UDL principles) that helps us identify UDL-related things we're already doing. This would help me understand where to target these UDL interventions.

How do we balance these UDL principles (that I think are great!) with preparing students to enter the 'real world' where many employers & continuing education programs etc. might not follow these principles?

I found the practicum difficult to engage in due to when in the quarter it was scheduled (weeks 6-8). Midterms and registration just made it difficult to juggle, whereas I think moving it to weeks 2-4 or 3-5 might have allowed for better engagement.
