Galileo's early version of a calculator helped with calculating exchange rates. This meant that banks could connect to European nations, making Italian banks be able to exchange money with banks all over Europe which built wealth in Italy. Wealthy families were often in competition with each other to see who could have the most beautiful city. Many wealthy families invested in art, buildings, and innovators in order to make their city the most beautiful. The Medici Family developed a system of banking that found a way of getting around the rules of the Catholic Church against charging interest. Instead of charging an interest rate, there was a fee for the exchange. Bankers grew in wealth because of this new system, which mean they could commission art or be patrons for artists.

Italy is surrounded by water, allowing port cities along the coast to become extremely wealthy due to the constant trade that occurred in them. Since Italy is close to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East which allowed it to have many trade routes. The climate in Italy is mild, which meant that the weather didn't disrupt trade. The long growing season in Italy meant that grapes for wine and olives could grow which was important for trade. And the more trade there was, the more Italy grew in wealth, which meant it could support artists and scientists.

The Italian culture during the Renaissance was accepting of new ideas. This allowed people to push the boundaries and explore new ideas and experiment. During this time, there was a shift in the way that people viewed life. Life started to be less about what happened after death, and more about living in the moment and valuing time on earth. Wealthy merchants showcased their wealth by commissioning art and were willing to spend money on artists, scientists, and thinkers.

There were many innovations in the Renaissance, and among them were the calculator and the compass. The calculator allowed bankers to exchange currencies and calculate interest, which made them grow in wealth, allowing them to patron artists, innovators, scientists and more. The military compass allowed soldiers to fire cannons more accurately which helped protect the goods on their ships that were meant for trade. The geometric compass allowed shipbuilders to make more accurate measurements of ships which meant they would be sturdier, could carry more goods, and travel further, all of which benefited trade, allowing merchants to have the money to support innovations, arts, and sciences.

Wealthy merchants and families, like the Medici Family, were the leaders of cites and were patrons of the arts and sciences. They helped people advance and expand in their fields by financially supporting them. The Duke of Mantua is a good example of this. He offered Galileo a position and payed him a salary and took care of his living expenses. This allowed innovators, mathematicians, artists, and scientists to be able to do expand their knowledge freely, without having to constantly worry about finances.
