Bards played a range of instruments, very rarely seen today. 
Most commonly used was the lute. This instrument is a string instrument, meaning it uses the sounds made by strings being pulled and vibrating. 
Large instrumental bands consisting of string instruments, large horns, and even harpsicords. (a mix between a piano and a lute) performed grand pieces of music to a very wealthy audience.
