One of her famous works is La Cena (The Supper), made in 1991. The piece is inspired by the myths of the Abakuá, an Afro-Cuban secret society.

This piece by Firelei Báez who is Dominican Republic (Afro-Caribbean heritage) uses bold colors and intricate patterns to address themes of racial identity, colorism, and social constructs of beauty. The title references the "paper bag test," a discriminatory practice historically used in some African American and Afro-Caribbean communities to privilege lighter skin tones. By incorporating the fan, often associated with femininity and leisure, Báez critiques societal standards that link skin color to worth or acceptance.

This work is important because it challenges viewers to confront historical biases and systemic racism while celebrating the resilience and complexity of Afro-Latino identities. Through her art, Báez amplifies underrepresented narratives and encourages a deeper understanding of cultural heritage and identity.

Firelei Báez | Can I Pass?

This piece is named "What You Know Bout Love," and it was created in 2022. The artist of this mural is Na'ye Perez, an Afro-Latino artist. He was born to a Cuban mother and a Haitian father. Perez moved to many states throughout his childhood and teenage years: Ohio, New Jersey, California, and New York. He now resides in Brooklyn, New York. Perez is a mixed-medium artist who uses his art to express Afro-Latino communities in the United States. In this piece, "What You Know Bout Love," Perez talks about the hood and how it has a bad repetition in the United States. Perez created this piece to show the beauty and the life people experience. In all of Perez's artwork, he uses bright colors to show the happiness in the pieces. Perez wants to change the minds of people who are prejudiced against his community.

Wilfredo Lam is an Afro-Latino artist who created Eternal Presence as part of his ongoing exploration of Afro-Cuban identity and spirituality. The Eternal Presence was created in honor of Cuban composer Alejandro García Caturla, who was a key figure in the Afrocubanismo movement. Caturla blended European and African cultural influences in his music, which resonated with Lam's own artistic vision. The painting shows a mysterious central figure surrounded by two mythical beings, all appearing still and trance-like, with palm fronds in the background that connect the work to Cuba's tropical environment.

He used his art to talk about race, power, and history in a raw and emotional way. Riding With Death is one of his final works, and it shows a skeleton riding a horse-like figure.

An artist of Afro-Latino origin is Jean-Michel Basquiat who was of Haitian, American, and Puerto Rican origin. Basquiat was born and raised is New York by his mother from Puerto Rico and his father from Haiti. Basquiat first became known for adding the name “SAMO” in his paintings, usually of graffiti, during the 1970’s. He was and even currently is know for the rise in the neo-expressionism art movement. Basquiat’s art pieces were centered around the themes of racial issues, racism, colonialism, and classism and its consequences seen through American society. His motif was a three pointed crown. Basquiat lived from 1960 until 1988 when he passed away due to an accidental overdose. Just before Basquiat’s death he painted his last painting, Riding with Death, in 1988. Art is very subjective meaning this art piece could be interpreted in many different ways. However, in my perception I think this painting expressed an opinion on societal powers on the human race. I think it also expresses the theme of death.

The artwork shown in the image is a vibrant and expressive painting that likely falls within the modern or abstract expressionist genre. It depicts a series of human faces, geometrically arranged within blocks and shapes, against a vivid, multicolored background dominated by warm hues such as orange and red, contrasted with cool tones like blue and green.

The piece conveys a strong emotional narrative, as the faces vary in expressions, suggesting themes of community, individuality, or collective experiences. The fragmented composition might symbolize the complexity of human relationships or cultural identities. The inclusion of geometric shapes and layered textures adds a sense of depth and structure, blending abstract and figurative elements.

Remedios Varo- By: Jansy Rodriguez

This is a painting from an Afro-Latin artist known as Remedios Varo. The painting is called “The Souls of the Mountain.” This drawing depicts the idea of how woman were viewed during the occupation of the Nazis in Paris. The idea of the oppression towards their freedom and rights were all taken away. Remedios Varo is a Mexican painter who pursed her interests in surrealism and seeking political change, in which made her follow her education through analytical psychology. She began to devote all her time into her paintings by the 1950s. Her paintings represented images featuring unusual individuals involved in magical and mystical activities in fantastical settings. This is why her artwork began to gain so much admiration. Her art work also represented a technical illustrator through the incorporation of architectural elements into her designs that would directly recall medieval art.

I wanted to introduce Tianna, an Afro-Latina born and raised in Deleware, singer and songwriter. Hearing her music piece “in Your hands” gave me an understanding that her soft and soothing vocal tones were meant for her to be a singer and songwriter. But not an ordinary singer but a Christian worshipper and songwriter. That’s what sparked my interest the most, especially after listening to the song “in Your hands.” It has a nice pop and soul rhythm, which I thought was new to me, especially how she can involve the gospel in her songs.
