All you need is some colored construction paper (even if you do not have this, that is okay.)

Let your child pick a color to write a poem about.  
Assign them some guidelines (examples):
-# of stanzas
-# of lines per stanza
-free verse or traditional
-how many figurative language devices must be included (or give them specific devices to include such as one example of a simile and two examples of personification)

The poem should reflect the color your kiddo picked. BONUS CHALLENGE: Have your kid state what tone the poem depicts. Have them circle words that help depict the tone of the poem.

Simply supply your kiddo with a poem for them to analyze (identify any figurative language, traditional or free verse, number lines and stanzas, tone and mood, etc.).  Once done, they are to draw a picture that depicts the theme /message  or main idea that the speaker/poet is trying to convey.  Below are some poems to use!
