Students will identify and describe the components of a functioning community. Students will demonstrate an understanding of cause and effect relationships within a community. Sources will include the visual text (discovery streaming videos, BrainPop Jr. videos, images of different communities), field trips to important community features within our town, and informational texts read aloud by the teacher and digitally. Students will work cooperatively to build a model of our community, choosing which community landmarks they will create. Students will present their work and share how the community landmark they chose helps to create a sense of belonging in our community.

Learning activities

Field trip to the fire station: Students will walk from the school to the fire station (through part of our town’s center, noting other community landmarks). They will have an opportunity to meet firefighters, see fire trucks and tools, watch a short fire safety video, and ask the firefighters questions about fire safety and about how they help the community. The firefighters in our community are the “experts” in what they do, so they are a valuable and credible source. After returning from the field trip, we will add a picture to the fire station to our community board, and the children will work together to explain how firefighters help people in the community. There will be a shared writing experience to record students thoughts and add it to our community board. I chose this activity as the firefighters in our community are the “experts” in what they do, so they are a valuable and credible source. The activity connects students with members of our community, helps them to learn fire safety rules, and integrates speaking, listening, and writing skills.(understanding)
2. Building a model: Students will use recycled materials (i.e. cereal boxes, paper towel tubes, etc) to build a model of a location in our community that helps meet the needs of the community’s members. This learning activity will be done once we have taken field trips to several community locations, and learned about all of the resources in our community. Children will choose what community location they will build, then they will work in groups based on their choices. Once the model is built, students will take a picture of their model using the Seesaw digital portfolio app on the iPad, then record how the location they chose helps create a sense of belonging in our community. I chose this activity to increase student motivation through choice and open-ended creativity while working on fine motor skills, cooperative skills, and speaking/listening skills. (create, understand)
3. Students will sort pictures of wants and needs. They will look through magazines and teacher provided pictures, cut out pictures that show either wants or needs, and sort the pictures into the appropriate category. Each student will have their own “poster” showing wants vs. needs. I chose this activity to work on fine motor skills, following multi-step directions, and differentiating between wants and needs. (analyze)
