Human beings have shown loyal tendencies in the past for survival. Is it something that it now less important in the 2000’s? Why or why not?

I think that loyalty still holds it's importance as it's held in the past because we live in a very exploitative time where all our data is online and at everyone's fingertips. I believe loyalty holds the same principle value of giving security, but now in a different manner. Instead of security for our lives as in the past, it is security of our livelihood and our privacy. As an example of the exploitative nature of the present, we can look at social media, which can be accessed by anyone, and has caused people such as James Gunn, the director of movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy to be fired from their jobs.

I think that loyalty is more important than fitting in or being popular since loyalty comes back around and is mutual, whereas being popular you are more susceptible to betrayal of others. I think this because with being popular and fitting in you constantly have to please everyone and possibly betray others slightly, inevitably leading to that coming back and causing conflict. In contrast, being loyal to others will makes them loyal to you, and overall less conflict. This is especially important considering the mob mentality seen in recent times that cause people to loose their jobs and ruining their livelihoods.

The rumble was happening at 7 o'clock and by 6:30, Ponyboy was back home to meetup with the gang, with whom presumably two members would not show up; Dally and Johnny. The rules of the rumble were no weapons and first ones to run lost. The Greasers would be with Tim Shepard's gang and the Brumly's. The Socs out numbered the Greaser's and associates 22 to 20. The rumble started when Darry faced of with Paul Holden, soon after Dally had joined the rumble. Ponyboy was nearly knocked out a few time but thanks to Darry and Dally, he was alright. The Socs ran off and Dally had told Ponyboy to rush to hospital to see Johnny. Once at the hospital, Johnny was deathly sick and died soon after Dally had told him that he was proud of him and the he was being made a hero in the papers as well as the other greasers. Before dying, Johnny tells Ponyboy the following; "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold...". After Johnny's death Dally breaks down and punches the walls in frustration / anger.

I think the S. E. Hinton included these tragic outcomes in the last two chapters because I feel that the author wanted to highlight the fact that everything comes with a consequence, whether that be good or bad. As an example of this, the greasers were being labelled as hero's in the newspaper's and they won against the Socs, but with that they lost people that every looked up to and people that connected the group. I think that these outcomes are necessary for the novel because they prove the loyalty that the group has for each other and their bond that can be compared to a family. I say this because Dally, for instance, was so affected by Johnny's death that he would rather be shot by the police than to deal with the trauma.

This poem relates to the characters in the novel since the poem mentions that everything is beautiful in it's early days, but fades with the passing hours. This can be seen with essentially all the characters, who all started off as normal kids but some event caused them to be tough and to lose their innocence or beauty. This can most notably be seen with Ponyboy, who at the start of the novel is very innocent, only reading books, not interested in fights but slowly over the course of the story and especially after Johnny's death, we can see that Ponyboy is acting tough with him even threatening Socs with a broken bottle, something he stated in earlier in a book he would never use to harm someone.
