Since its initial members came from all 48 states, the division acquired the nickname All-American, which is the basis for its famed "AA" shoulder patch. The division later served in World War II where, in August 1942, it was reconstituted as the first airborne division of the U.S. Army and fought in numerous campaigns during the war.

Major General Omar Bradley.
Bradley was the leader of the overall army and ordered officially where the 82nd airborne went. he was a successful leader because he took command of over the 12th US Army division which entailed 1.3 million troops. This leadership role came around the attack on Normandy which was successful.
Matthew Ridgway,
Matthew was the commanding general of the 82nd airborne division. He was a successful leader because he susses fully planned the attack on Sicily, Italy, and Normandy.

James M. Gavin,
He was the third commanding general of the 82nd airborne. He was a successful leader because he was the only general officer to make 4 jumps with his paratroopers. This makes him a susses full leader because he is not only telling them before the mission what to do but he is also going with them so he has as much risk as them.

All of these leaders possessed great leadership qualities because they have all fought in wars previous to leading the 82nd airborne division. They are also successful because they planned and executed many successful attacks.

For example Colonel Emory Jenison Pike of the 321st Machine Gun Battalion, was the first member of the 82nd to be awarded the Medal of Honor. then During an operation, 19-year old Private John R. Towle of the 504th PIR was awarded the 82nd Airborne Division's second Medal of Honor of World War II. These are significant because the medal of honor is the highest medal a soldier can get so for one division to get 2 of them shows their bravery and significance to the war.

They where also mobilized in the Vietnam war. This division is still one of the toughest divisions in the army.
