NASA has been using robotics in their space program for years. They created robots to do things that humans can not more efficiently. The RASSOR is a robot that NASA scientists use to pick up sample of dirt to send back to Earth for examination. The Valkyrie was created to work in dangerous conditions that humans could not work in. The Rover was used to excavate new lands and send back samples as well as the RASSOR. Robots are also safer and less expensive than sending humans to Earth because we don't have to send money on food and housing and if something happened to the Robot, it wouldn't be as dangerous as sending a human instead.

This article explains why we use robots in space and how it's safer then sending humans up. They don't have to eat, sleep, or breathe. They also can leave the robots in there and not worry about sending them back down. It's overall safer and less expensive which is why we are developing more robots through the NASA space program.
