The people of Arbroath are being asked to speak up and have their say in the future of the town. Arbroath town centre is the latest area in Angus to have a design charrette – a consultation and design programme that gathers local opinions, ideas and aspirations, with a view to delivering a vision of what communities want over the short, medium and long term.

Brechin, Carnoustie and Forfar have recently taken part in these creative conversations, activities and events and had an intensive look at existing and possible future services, including housing, retail, leisure and tourism. Now it’s Arbroath’s turn to talk and organisers want to hear the voices of young and old.

From Tuesday 2 – Thursday 4 February from their base at St Andrew’s Church, 21 Hamilton Green, Arbroath, DD11 1JG, the charrette team will invite local people, businesses and agencies to have their say on Arbroath’s future.

There is no need to register for any event; just turn up, join in and share your ideas!

Charrettes are collaborative events that bring together local people of all ages with highly qualified, experienced design and planning professionals. Together they seek to find solutions that will benefit the area over the short and long term. The Arbroath Talks programme has been developed by Angus Council with funding assistance from Scottish Government.

Aims & Objectives

The Charrette aims and objectives are to:

• Confirm boundaries, focus, challenges & priorities for Arbroath’s centre through dialogue
with local people.

• Develop a shared long-term vision & strategy for the future of Arbroath’s centre set within
context of the town hinterland.

• Take full account of the agreed assets & strengths of Arbroath’s centre & challenges
/opportunities it currently faces.

• Establish a commitment from the local community, businesses & stakeholders to deliver
the changes required to achieve the vision.

• Establish a clear, agreed ten year development framework & action plan to turn outputs
from the charrette into a longer term delivery strategy.

• Charrette outputs to influence future Angus Locality Outcome Improvement, Local
Development & Housing Plans and other significant local policies and investment
proposals.

Topics hot for discussion will include town centre regeneration, digital access, employment
opportunities and the local economy, and building on Arbroath’s assets.

Charrette Team

The team led by Glasgow based Austin-Smith:Lord LLP (urban designers & architects) and Douglas
Wheeler Associates Ltd (economic regeneration specialists) with Ryden (property consultants),
WAVEparticle (artists / facilitators) and Transport Planning Ltd have been commissioned to
facilitate the charrette. The team bring with them their experience of operating such events in
Elgin, Port Glasgow, Clydebank and closer to home at Brechin.
